This Is The Last Day Of My Benefit For The Oral Cancer Foundation

Karen · 5 Comments

October 2010

And whether you are just plain glad I won’t be posting about it anymore after today, except to wrap things up tomorrow, or whether you’re glad I’m reminding you that this is the last day to donate your spare change or bid on the auctions that end today, I have to say, it has been a labor of love for me. The Oral Cancer Foundation exists to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities.

Before Jim was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue back in 2001, we had no idea that this killer even existed. While we knew about lung cancer and brain cancer and breast cancer, we had never heard about oral cancer and what an ugly, disfiguring, tortuous killer it is. My monetary goal for this fundraiser is $500.  The amount raised so far is $331.59. But, there are 3 auction items still open until 11:59 pm CST tonight:

Handmade Reversible Green and Blue Apron

Handmade Sterling Silver and Turquoise Earvines

Handmade Reversible Blue and Yellow Apron

And you can still donate your spare change by clicking on that DONATE button at the top of the right sidebar. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to The Oral Cancer Foundation on February 1, 2011.

While I had hoped to raise money to support this organization in their efforts, my greater goal has been to bring awareness of it to the people I know and love, and to those I have never met out there in the internetz world.  And the  message is: Get Screened For Oral Cancer This Year. The next time you go to your doctor or dentist for a check up, just ask them to do it. It only takes about 5 minutes, it doesn’t hurt, and it could save your life.

So, if you are reading this today, and have never made a comment, I would love for you to leave just a word to let me know you’re there, so I will know if I have reached anyone with this message. And thank you to everyone for your support.

Only 2 More Days Left In Benefit For The Oral Cancer Foundation

Karen · 1 Comment

My fundraiser to benefit The Oral Cancer Foundation is nearing the end–only 2 more days to go! I received a $2.00 donation from Penelope at Penelope’s Oasis, which brings the total so far to $331.59. There are also a couple of auction items that have no bids yet:

Handmade Reversible Green and Blue Apron

Donated by Sally

Handmade Sterling Silver and Turquoise Earvines

Donated by Geogypsy

Won’t you please donate your spare change by clicking on the “DONATE” button at the top of the right side bar here, or make a bid on one of these lovely handmade items? Saving a smile is in your power today!

The money being raised in this benefit will be donated to The Oral Cancer Foundation at the end of January, 2011, in celebration of my husband’s 10 years of survival of oral cancer, and in honor of Michael H. Yeaw who lost his battle. You can read more about this fundraising effort here and here.  Please help us reach the goal of $500.

Sally makes these aprons, and I think they are just soooo cute! And because it is reversible, you get two looks in one:

If You Love Me, Send Me Your Spare Change. Ok, Send It Even If You Don’t.

Karen · 3 Comments

I continue to be humbled and honored by the generosity of my friends, whether they are people I actually know in person, or the ones who read my blog and connect with me online. I woke up this morning to a donation of $23.80 sitting in my inbox from Cheryl. Thank you so  much, Cheryl. That was just an awesome way to start my day! And yesterday, I received a check from Judy, who won the auction for the water bottle with a bid of $7.50–she sent $25.00! The total amount raised for The Oral Cancer Foundation is $323.59!

I went to the post office today to mail off some items to winners. While I was there, I struck up a conversation with the postal clerk. She said her 17 year old nephew chews tobacco, and has been told by his dentist that he has “pre-cancerous cells” inside his cheek. I gave her one of my business cards, and invited her to look at my blog and follow the links here to The Oral Cancer Foundation to find information to give him–I hope he gives up that chew and lives a long and happy life cancer free, but the odds are, he won’t. Y’all say a prayer for him tonight, ok?

Don’t forget, I am still taking your spare change donations, just click on that “Donate” button over in the right side bar to send me the spare change in your Paypal account. And by the way, have you been screened yet? This is a benefit for The Oral Cancer Foundation.

12 For 10 Auction: Sterling & Turquoise Earvines

Karen · 5 Comments

Our good friends, Mike and Gaelyn at Bryce Canyon NP

I guess you noticed the 12 up there, instead of 10 in the 10 For 10 auction. That’s because FabGrandpa and I have some of the best friends you could ever meet!  One of them, Gaelyn from Geogypsy, has generously donated a pair of sterling silver and turquoise earvines for me to offer at auction in my benefit for The Oral Cancer Foundation.

Earvines by Geogypsy

Gaelyn makes these earvines. I have seen them in person and they are really beautiful and unique. They allow someone with one hole pierced ears to look as if they have multiple piercings. Here is how she describes them:

“Ear Vines bend to follow the curve of the ear. They only require one pierced hole. Insert unbeaded wire from front to back
and pull down like a dangle earring. Swing up with ear between wires, align as desired and give a little pinch”

These beautiful sterling silver and turquoise earvines normally sell for $20 a pair.  All proceeds from this auction are being donated to The Oral Cancer Foundation, a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities. To make a bid, just leave a comment here with a dollar amount that you wish to bid. The auction winner is responsible for paying shipping from Arizona zip code 85362.

See the auction rules here.

A Nice Email I Received This Morning

Karen · 2 Comments

I have been running my auction to benefit The Oral Cancer Foundation since November, 10 weeks with one item a week for what I called my 10 For 10 Auction To Celebrate 10 Years of Survival. My sweetheart, my life, my husband, (yes, he really is all three) FabGrandpa celebrated 10 years cancer free on January 10. Keeping up with this has been a monumental challenge for me, just because I am pressured to do it completion. I am a a “starter”, not a “finisher.”

So, with all that said, I am adding TWO MORE items to the auction. Why? you ask? Because Sally sent me an email offering to donate two handmade aprons for the cause!  Here is what she had to say:

“I have been on a sewing kick lately and would like to know if you would like two fabric aprons in this style but with different fabrics to auction off. Actually, the ones I would do would be reversible with coordinated fabrics. I haven’t sewn them up yet but have the supplies ready to go. I can send pictures of each apron when finished. Plus I can mail them to you or send them direct to the auction winners. I probably won’t be doing Relay for Life this year so this would be my contribution towards a cancer related event. Let me know.”

I am so thrilled, first because someone besides me thinks this is a good cause, and second, because it came out of the blue, no strings attached, from someone I have never met. So, you’re gonna see three auction posts this week, instead of one. Thank you so much, Sally!

Thank you, Eric!
