Going For A Pedicure Tomorrow

Yeah, I know, that is not such a big new item, but I am taking Emily with me. As you may know, she went home from rehab last week on Thursday to her in-laws home. She and Thomas and the children will be staying there for a little while, until Emily feels confident enough to stay at home by herself with the baby. I have visited her a couple of times over there already.

Tomorrow, we will go to get pedicure’s, then to Coldstone Creamery for an ice cream treat. I think it will be a fun mother-daughter outing, and will be good for her to get out and about in public again. We are both really looking forward to our time together tomorrow.

Fabgrandpa and I have driven past this restaurant several times in our travels around Haralson County, but never stopped in until last week. With a name like Phat Phil’s we had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be pretty good country type food.

The inside of the restaurant is very clean, and had plenty of places to sit. We chose a booth, and started looking at the menu. There is also a chalkboard on the wall that lists daily specials.

Fabgrandpa ordered the country fried steak and gravy. I had fried catfish, which is NOT gluten free but I was prepared to suffer the consequences. The catfish was fried just right, and came with two sides. I had green beans and sweet potato casserole.

The meal was pretty good, and the prices were not that bad. We both ate dinner for about $22.00. We will probably eat there again if we are on that side of town again. Maybe the bathroom sink won't break! — Maybe the bathroom sink won’t break!

Sigh. The day after we bought our new car, Fabgrandpa and I were sitting in the living room watching TV. I started smelling smoke, that smell that you smell when there is an electrical fire. It was coming out of the heat vents! We turned the heat pump off, and the smell went away. Fabgrandpa went outside to check on the unit out there, and didn’t see anything wrong, so he came back in the house and started the heat pump again. There was that smell again.

We turned it off again, and scrounged up all the electric space heaters we had around the house, to use while we figured out what to do next. It didn’t help much that we were on the first day of a predicted cold snap where the temps would be down below 30 degrees every night for a week.

The next day, Fabgrandpa got on the phone, calling around to different companies who install heat pump systems. He found three companies in the tiny yellow pages for our county, and made appointments for all three of them to come out to give us estimates. We are now waiting for them to come out and tell us the bad news. This makes everything except the bathroom sink that has given us problems since we moved in. Maybe this will be the last of the money pit for a while.

I am a bit late with my review of these delicious strawberries. As you may have read, my daughter, Emily had a stroke on February 10, and I have been spending most of my time either at the hospital or driving to and from the hospital. One Of The Sweetest Moments Ever!

You never expect your child to have a life threatening event. Even when your children are grown adults, you still don’t expect things to happen to them that are so serious, like a stroke. I know it is one of the hardest things I have ever had to cope with as a mother. Yes, there were times when my children were sick or hurt when they were little, but never anything more serious than a broken foot. I would have expected one of my older relatives to have a stroke, not that I would want any of them to, it’s just more common with older people for that to happen. It just isn’t something you expect to hear about your child.

Thank goodness that she is getting better. Little by little, day by day, Emily is improving so well that she was allowed to go home from rehab after just one week of inpatient care. She will still have to go to outpatient rehab therapy for a while, three times a week. And she will have to wear that lovely blue hat until she has the next surgery to put her skull back in place. She has a really good attitude about it though, and still has a great sense of humor. She and Fabgrandpa told secret jokes to each other all evening, keeping each other laughing the whole time.

And what did she ask for when she was discharged from the hospital? Longhorn Steaks. So, Fabgrandpa and I met Emily, her husband Thomas, Spencer, Parker, and Thomas’s parents for dinner that night. It was a very sweet moment to have that meal together in a happy setting.

What I have learned from this, and from my own hospital stay and serious illness last year is this: Never let a day go by that you don’t tell your family and friends how much you love them. How much you need them. And how much you appreciate all they do for you. Even when you are mad, put aside the anger and just say “I Love You” to the people who are important to you. Because you never know when they won’t be there anymore.

Like I said in my previous post, things just seem to happen all at once. The day after we bought the new car, our heat pump just died in the middle of the night. The old dinosaur was over twenty years old, so it was bound to happen. Back when I was growing up in west Georgia, I was in love with Peter from Herman’s Hermits. I didn’t have any posters on the walls though, because I shared a bedroom with all of my siblings. If we all had just one poster, it would have covered up all of the walls in that one room!
