One thing that Fabgrandpa and I discovered while we lived in our RV for 13 years is that no matter where you find yourself for a few days or a season, there is always something interesting to do there. We took the time to get to know the area we were in, even in the smallest of towns, and least populated areas. We loved to eat where the locals ate, and visit the local attractions, shop the thrift stores, and buy from local merchants. These things were the biggest parts of living in an RV. Now that we are back in a regular house, and take our trips in a car, we still try to do all the interesting things in whatever area we find ourselves. Galena County, Illinois is one such place. There are plenty of things to keep you busy for a week or two, or you can just relax in motel or bed and breakfast. Here are some of the interesting things to do near Stockton, Illinois.
Heritage Hollow Experiential Farm

Starved Rock State Park
Starved Rock State Park has an interesting history, beginning with Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe of Native Americans. The land was purchased from the US Government by a soldier as compensation for his service the US Army. He later sold it to Ferdinand Walther, who developed the land for vacationers. In 1911, the State of Illinois purchased the site, making it the state’s first recreational park. Reserve a room at the lodge, a cabin, or a campsite. There are hiking trails, kayaking, bird watching, and more.
Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant
Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant in Galena, Illinois, presents an Italian menu with things like Veal Parmesan, Espresso Steak, and Bruschetta Salmon. Comfort foods include Lobster Ravioli and Linguine and Meatballs. The Fried Green Tomatoes are fried in olive oil, and topped with cheese and marinara sauce. It’s one place I would probably go two nights in a row.
In addition to these, there are plenty of thrift stores, antique shops, and other interesting things to do near Stockton, Illinois to keep you busy. Fabgrandpa and always look for thrift stores when traveling. You never know what you’ll find until you look.
