Something I saw this week made me think about this furniture. I bought it in (I think) 1978, as a Valentine gift for myself. The set came with a sofa, two chairs, a coffee table, two end tables, and two lamps. All made out of heavy pine boards, and all had matching brown plaid cushions. It was not very pretty, and not really very comfortable, but it was cheap and sturdy. I think I paid about $300 for the whole shebang!
I figured that with three kids, who were about 6, 4, and 3 years old, that it would be indestructible. I was right. That furniture went through a lot of spend the night parties, a lot of “Friday night everyone sleep in the living room so we can wake up and watch cartoons in the morning” and lots of teenager pizza parties.
This photo was taken in 1984, the day I moved into the last house I owned. We had that furniture until 1993, when I finally bought a new set. We took the pieces apart, and had a bonfire in the back yard.

OMG, I owned that furniture. Bought it used in the 80s and sold it in the 90s. Bet it was fun to burn it. Love the stone fireplace with the knotty pine.

I can remember seeing lots of furniture that looked like that, but never owned any. Bet it made a warm fire 🙂

That was pretty trendy furniture in the 70s. Sound like it saw plenty of good times too.

Oh my goodness. I had that exact same furniture or something so close to it that it would be hard to tell them apart. We got our set in 1979! I was so excited. It was the first new furniture that I had ever owned.I think we had to pay more than you and we did not get lamps. Everything costs more in Canada! It was indestructible. I did paint all the frames and recovered the cushions. We had it until 2006! My daughter has the coffee table and my son has the armchair and rocking chair.

And oh I forgot!!!! I am still using the end tables. I refinished them. 🙂 I have been thinking of replacing them lately but I have not found anything that I want. They are like old friends to me.

Oh geez, I owned a very similar set with orange and brown plaid cushions. I was newly married and couldn't afford much else, but we had the complete set with the sofa, a chair, a rocking chair, ottoman, coffee table and two end tables. I think it came with matching lamps too! Luckily it all went with the husband when he became the "ex". 🙂
Thanks for sharing in the Remember Whensday meme. Sorry I am so late visiting this week.
I thought about you in the grocery store today. I came across some gluten-free pasta at Wal-mart that not only made me think about my dad, but you as well.

I think my daughter is still using a similar coffee table, and she has the dining table and chairs to match, all handed down from her husband's family. It certainly was quite indestructible!
