Rainy Day At The Grand Canyon
We went out to Kaibab Lodge in the Kaibab National Forest for lunch today. The rain started falling on us on our way home.

The clouds in the sky looked menacing, like it could get very ugly very fast:

We drove out of the storm by the time we got home. There were clouds in the canyon, so I ran across the street to get some photos:

That’s clouds, not smoke. Sometimes a non-sunny day can be more beautiful than a sunny one.

Gluten Free Nectarine-Pear Pie

Ok, so that may look like a strange combination, but it is good. The back story is that my refrigerator is on the fritz AGAIN, and I had to use up some nectarines and a gluten free pie crust I had in there. There weren’t enough nectarines to make the pie, so I added a can of pears. What is that they say about necessity being the mother of invention…
3 nectarines, peeled and sliced
1 (16oz) can pear slices
1 tsp cinnamon
2 Tbls cornstarch
1/4 stick of butter or margarine
1/4 teaspoon salt
Your favorite gluten free pie crust mix
Mix the nectarines, pears, cinnamon, cornstarch, butter and salt together in a bowl. Roll out one part of the pie crust between two pieces of plastic wrap that has been sprinkled with cornstarch. Place it in the pie plate. Pour in the fruit mixture. Roll out the second part of the pie crust, and place on top of the fruit. Cut a couple of slits in the top crust. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve warm or cold, and be prepared to moan in delight!

Did You Know?
Did you know that there is an easy way of converting pdf to word documents? I only wish I had known this a long time ago. I have created Amelia’s Quilt Pattern in a pdf file, then somehow lost the original word document. I wanted to go back and make some changes to the pattern instructions to make them easier to understand, but had no way to do it without retyping the entire document, and inserting more than 20 photos and formatting the entire thing again. Then, I found this website that lets you export pdf to word files. You can then change whatever you need to change, right there in MS Word.
With Adobe ExportPDF you upload a file, even one with scanned text. This saves you sooo much time because you don’t have to retype or reformat your project. You just change whatever needs changing, and spend your time more productively. Adobe ExportPDF converts your pdf into a Word document, while maintaining all the fonts, photos, and formatting! I am so glad I found this! This online service costs only $29.99 for a full year, and lets you export an unlimited number of files. If you work with pdf files a lot, this is a great time saver!

Why Do I Do This?
I have started once again to make a list of things that I want to accomplish over my winter “off” season. I say “off” because you if you know me, you know that I don’t just sit around twiddling my thumbs all winter. I have to have something to do. And because I am probably OCD, I make list after list after list of To Do’s. (no, not for Fabgrandpa, for me). I usually have a much longer list of things to do than I could ever possible complete.
My lists, while I do mark off things I have done, tend to get longer every day. I constantly add things to them, so that it is never completely done. Before we leave the North Rim next month at the end of the season, I’ll clean out the pantry, go through all the closets and drawers, and do a general cleaning out–both to lighten the load and to make it easier to pack up for the road.
After we get to Georgia, there is a loooonnnngg list of things to do. Because the carpets have gotten so dirty with both FabGrandpa and I clomping around in our work boots, I’ll be looking for a Chem-Dry place to see if there is one nearby. I need to get carpet cleaning done as soon as possible so that if we have company it won’t look so bad. I could do it myself with a can of carpet shampoo, but I want my carpet to also be treated for protection against stains and dirt.
I’ll look for a manicure and pedicure as soon as possible. I haven’t had either done in going on six months and it is about time! Oh, and I’m going to see Becky for a good hair cut.
So, here is what the lists look like right now:
Get Ready List:
Clean out closets and drawer
Defrost Refrigerator
Re-arrange cabinets
Wash and pack away uniforms
To Do Off Season:
get carpet cleaned
take inventory of fabric and patterns
write tutorials for sewing projects
work on online store
look for craft shows to attend
look for a house
make Emily’s quilt
finish Seth and Sarah’s quilt
So, they don’t look too bad right now, but you know I’ll add new stuff. Why do I do this to myself?

I’ve Been Fab For Five Years!

Thanks to one of my bloggy friends who is nearing her own Blogaversary, I checked, and sure enough, today is my my Five Year Blogaversary. I have come a long long loooonnnggg way since September 8, 2006. I started out writing Fabgrandma on Blogspot, because my son was stationed in England and had met and married a British woman. I wanted her to get to know our family before she moved to the US. What started out as just a family thing, has turned into my passion–writing about my life, my travels, my gluten free diet, my grandchildren.

I often describe my blog this way:
“Telling the world way too much about me whether they want to know it or not. I write about my life of living full time in an RV, eating a gluten free diet, things I do for fun, and things that are important to me. I make you look at photos of my grandchildren, talk about my husband’s survival of oral cancer, show you things I have made. You know you want to look”

My writing has improved quite a bit since that very first post back in 2006. FabGrandpa and I have lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alabama, and Arizona since then, working our way across the country at privately owned campgrounds, state parks, national parks, and forest service campgrounds. I found out I have to eat a gluten free diet. One of my lifetime dreams came true, I gained a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, two grandchildren, and a almost son-in-law. I have learned a lot about myself, and learned how to sew in an invisible zipper. I even went turkey hunting! But the post I made that consistently gets the most views is all about buying bras. Go figure.

Thank you for reading, for commenting, for emailing me when I haven’t posted in a while. To help me celebrate my Five Year Blogaversary, will you do me a favor and leave a comment–tell me what your favorite post was, how long you’ve been reading my blog, what you like about it, or just say HI.
