I love gardening. Growing my own vegetables and flowers has always been something I take pride in. It lets me feel good to know that I grew that. And knowing exactly what is in my food is something that makes me feel good when I serve it to my family. I remember when my daughter, Becca, was about three years old, I looked out the kitchen window and saw her sitting in a tree. She had two green onions in one hand, and a handful of broccoli in the other. She had gone out to our family vegetable garden and helped herself. I wasn’t worried about here eating those straight from the garden because I didn’t use pesticides or chemicals. Back To The Roots is a company that believes in the same gardening practices that I do, so I was really happy when they asked me if I wanted to try their products.
What fun it was to get the Mini Mushroom Farm. Winter in Georgia is not as bad as it can be in other places, but you still can’t grow a whole lot of stuff in winter. Being able to plant and grow and harvest something in the dead of winter was awesome! And you wouldn’t believe how easy it was.

The first step was to open the box and take the plastic wrapped mushroom farm out. I cut an X in the plastic and folded it back, then scraped the white mycelium layer off of the dirt. Place the plastic bag of dirt in a bucket of water and soak it for eight hours. Put the bag of dirt back in the box, and set it a place out of direct sunlight.

I put mine on the kitchen counter, which made it easy to water it every day. In just 10 days, you can harvest your mushrooms, and cook em up for dinner.

I picked the mushrooms out of the box, and cooked them up for dinner. I wish I could tell you I made a fancy gourmet dish out of them, but in reality, we had a ground beef and mushroom goulash type of meal. The oyster mushrooms grown in the Back To The Roots Mushroom Farm are edible, and taste really good. And just because I find beauty in the things I grow, here is one more pic of the mushrooms, from the back.

Back To The Roots Mushroom Farm retails for $19.99 and will grow up to four “crops” .
The company has several other products in addition to the mushroom farm kit. The Garden-In-A-Can Herb Garden comes in a set of four cans and grows Basil, Dill, Sage, and Cilantro. It retails for $23.96. I am currently growing a can of basil. See the other products offered by Back To The Roots here.
Do you like mushrooms? What would you cook using them if you have a Back To The Roots Mushroom Farm?
