Oh, My Goodness! It’s October, and that means that it is open enrollment time for insurance again. If you are like me, you have spent hours and hours reading the different benefit options, until it feels like your eyes are bleeding. My husband and I even went to a financial advisor in an effort to help us determine what the best options would be for our health insurance coverage. By the time we walked out of his office, my head was spinning like Linda Blair in The Exorcist! All those terms still meant nothing to me. PPO, HMO, Preferred Provider Network, Deductible, Co-Pay, Co-Insurance, Out of Network, and on and on and on!

Then we went home and studied some more. We looked online. We read the brochures again and again. I don’t know how anyone can figure out what the best options are without taking time to study like it’s for a final or a term paper.

I know that with our auto insurance, we just used the same company to cover our vehicles year after year, without ever checking into rates elsewhere. I just did not want to spend that time calling around. However, last year I decided to call around, and wound up saving over $600 a year for our coverage! It is the same with health insurance. Just because a company was your best bet financially in years past, doesn’t mean that it will be this year. Your circumstances may have changed, or the company’s benefits and rates may have changed. It is definitely worth the effort to check on what your company and another one has to offer.

Americans are terrible at taking time to understand their enrollment options for their health insurance. We typically spend more time planning a family vacation or a new computer purchase than we do shopping for or reading about our health insurance benefits. Because of this, four out of ten American workers waste an average of $750 each year due to mistakes on their insurance benefit. Amazing!

The holidays are fast approaching, but what if you still need inspiration for your outdoor decor? Here are just six ways to spice up your yard this Christmas.

1. Buy Fairy Lights
Fairy lights are the great classic of Christmastime decorating, so don’t be afraid to go a little crazy. Frame your windows with red and green; decorate your rooftop with white and gold; use flashing multicolored lights to make all the neighborhood children “ooh” and “ahh.”

2. Use All Available Space
Your front lawn isn’t the only place that you can decorate. What about putting a star on top of your tallest tree? How about wrapping your patio chairs with laurels and wreaths? Have you considered dying the gravel on your driveway in holiday colors?

3. Go Green
Mistletoe may be one of the most popular Christmastime plants, but there are others that you can spread around your garden, too. Frankincense is easy to grow and will make your entire yard smell like the holidays; poinsettia will be bright and festive along your fence; holly berries can be cultivated around your mailbox.

4. Illuminate Dark Corners
Make your entire yard seem bigger by sticking lights and lanterns in its darker corners. You can also use this trick with the exterior of your home. Wind a few strands around your stairways and railings; decorate the trim of doorways and windows; draw attention to your chimney Santa with outdoor lighting around his sleigh.

5. Let It Snow
You don’t have to live in a snowy climate to transform your lawn into a winter wonderland. Fake frost can be scattered on top of your bushes and gutters, and large, decorative flakes can be hung from branches and pasted onto windows. You can also use light bars to create a shining glow like the snow is really glistening.

6. Get Creative with Ornaments
You’ve put a wreath on the door and a procession of reindeer on the lawn. Now what? Think about things like bows, bells, ornaments, icicles and candy canes. Think about stockings and snowmen. You can even “wrap” your bushes like Christmas presents if you have enough paper!

These are just six ways to embrace the holiday spirit with your exterior design. Whether you’re decorating your first home or just looking for new ideas for an old lawn, use these tips and tricks to make your landscape one of the most festive on the block.
