Bringing a dog into your home can be an excellent time for the whole family, and a dog will show you loyalty and reciprocate the love you give it right back. But loving your dog alone isn’t enough to truly show them you care for them. A dog is reliant on you to give it everything it needs and take care of it properly to ensure they have a happy and healthy life. So how can you show your dog you care and give it the best life possible?

Nutritious diet
The diet you feed your dog will play a massive part in how healthy they are, how well they develop, and even, to some extent, their behavior too. You want to feed your pet foods that are high in meat content and contain a mix of vitamins and minerals your dog needs. Check the dog food you use meets FDA standards and you are feeding them an appropriate amount for their breed and size. You should be able to see your dog’s waistline; they should be tucked in underneath, and you should be able to feel their ribs when stroking them. This indicates your dog is in lean condition and not being overfed. Obesity in dogs can cause health problems, put increased strain on their joints, and reduce their lifespan. Avoid giving too much human food as treats to help them retain a healthy, beneficial diet.
Exercise
Each dog breed will have different requirements for exercise. Some breeds are lazier and more laid back, meaning they don’t need much exercise daily; others, such as the Border Collie or Belgian Malinois, need a lot of exercise and stimulation. Ensure you know what your breed needs to ensure your dog gets the appropriate amount of exercise each day. Be it playing with toys, agility work, running alongside you if you run, or just going on long walks.
Training
All dogs should have basic training, but dog training is essential to stimulate your dog and support your bond. Whether this is teaching your dog life skills such as neutrality around other dogs, loose lead walking, or boundaries so they don’t escape through open doors, or you are teaching them tricks, you need to include training in your day. Enrolling in dog training classes such as with All Dogs Unleashed Dog Training can be a good idea, or you can train your dog yourself; this is a great way to show them how much you love them and spend more time with them one-on-one.
Enrichment
Enrichment for dogs is another way to tire them out; a tired dog is a happy dog! Enrichment allows your dog to use its brain to solve puzzles, usually for a food reward at the end. This can be via using a lick mat to give your dog treats or food. Licking is soothing and calming for dogs, and giving them this opportunity can help relax them and slow down their eating. While sniffing is something all dogs should be doing, using snuffle mats or games where your dog needs to use their nose can be an excellent enrichment option. 20 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hour’s physical exercise.
Showing your dog that you love them needs more than just showering them with attention. You need to give them the best life possible, and the above ways are perfect for showing them you love and care about them and are giving them the best life possible.
