Having the grandchildren come over to stay is a great opportunity for bonding and the best time to show them how much fun grandma and grandpa are, so what are the best ways to make sure they enjoy their stay? Here are five to do when the grandkids come to stay that will insure that they will be making memories to last a lifetime.
Good food
One of the things you never forget is how good grandma’s food tasted when you were a kid. A definite way to a child’s heart is through their belly, so be sure to make them a dish of your yummiest comfort food when they come to stay.
Indulging them with some sweet treats is kind of a given too. It’s the parent’s job to make sure the kids eat a well-balanced nutritious diet, and it is the grandparent’s job to throw that all out of the window and offer a selection of delicious desserts, milk and cookies, candy surprises, and whatever else puts a smile on their little faces!
You can also have fun baking together too. Why not try decorating some homemade cookies or cupcakes?
It’s important, though, to make sure they clean their teeth after all those treats as enamel on baby teeth is much thinner than on an adult’s. Otara Dental provides dental services to people of all ages and has some great advice on keeping even the littlest one’s teeth healthy.
Visit fun places
Find out what you have in your area that would make a great day out with kids. The local zoo, amusement park, or bowling alley will keep them entertained all day. Even if you don’t have anything like that near to you or your budget won’t stretch that far, the playground, skate park, or a nature walk offer hours of fun too.
Watch a movie
Snuggle up together on the sofa, grab the popcorn and settle in for a movie night. The kids will love choosing a film, or you can even share a classic movie with them they might not otherwise have heard of. The original Mary Poppins or Disney’s The Jungle Book never get old and give today’s blockbusters a run for their money.
Share a skill
For some real quality time together and to pass on something that could prove useful their whole lives, why not share one of your skills.
Whether you are an expert sewer, a knitting addict, or a dab hand with a hammer and chisel, whatever your skills, spend some time teaching them to your grandchildren, and it will provide some really special moments together.
Arts and Crafts
Having a go at some arts and crafts is another fun thing to do together. If you all create one thing to leave behind at your house and another to take back with them, it will act as a lovely reminder of that time you spent together. Perhaps have a go at making each other a keyring or a pin.
Alternatively, have a go at painting one of the favorite memories of the day, perhaps a picture of the playpark, or everyone squashed together for movie night, and it will help to reinforce that happy memory.
While the younger children will enjoy pre-planned activities, older children might prefer to decide what to do together, but no matter what you get up to, the important thing is just to have lots of fun together and create fond memories.
