As our parents or the people who raised us grow older, they will then need a bit of looking after. Things can get more difficult or forgotten about as well as illnesses and injuries that put them out of action in certain tasks. We all want what’s best for our parents and can help out in small ways to big ways and then sorting out things for them when we know we can’t meet some of their needs anymore. Here are some ways to help your elderly parents.

A Nice Home Cooked Meal
Sometimes it can be quite a bit of effort to get something nutritious, filling and delicious made up when you have little energy or live alone. It is easier to get a takeaway, have something simple that isn’t very nutritious, or a ready meal. There are two simple and easy ways you can help in this situation. The first would be to invite them over for dinner, whether that is once a week or as often as you want to. You can make sure they are well-fed and happy as well as giving them some extra socializing time and quality time with their grandchildren.
The second way would be to take them over portions of what you make or batch cook them some dinners to freeze so they just need to heat them. It doesn’t take much time at all and again you can make sure they are getting all the nutrients and goodness they need while saving them time and energy so they can take it easy and look after themselves.
Spend More Time With Them
We all know what it is like, life gets in the way, work is manic, the kids drive us crazy and we have a house to run which leaves very little time for anything else. Just like a doctor’s appointment, put it in your diary every so often to spend time with your parents. It doesn’t have to be anything major, popping round for a cup of tea and a chat, having them over for dinner, and to relax and watch tv in the evening. Basically just going about your normal routine but including them in parts. It means the world to them, as people get older they tend to get more and more isolated so quality time with the family is precious.
Senior Living Accommodation
In certain instances, our parents may need to move out of their home and either move into assisted living or need round the clock care. It could be they suffer from chronic pain and need constant care and attention. It can be a massive strain to take these tasks on so by moving them into accommodation you are going to be much more able to look after them in other ways. You can help and organize the whole moving process from touring different accommodations to booking the senior moving services. By hiring services to help with the moving aspect of the situation it will make the whole thing a lot easier and more organized. They can handle the entire transition and can look to accommodate any special needs or requests that your parents may have. They can also create an entire moving plan so you and your parents know exactly what to expect and won’t have any anxiety about things moving forward. If you need help with the expenses you might try for a revenue based loan.
Assess And Adapt Their Home
Whether they move into assisted living or remain at home, it is best to do a quick tour of the house and see if they need anything changed or altered to help them. It may be that they can’t reach the top shelves in the cupboards and trying to climb or stand on something could result in an injury, so putting up some more shelves lower down for them to have access to would be better suited. They may also need things like handrails, shower chairs, chair lifts, and an emergency pull cord. These things help prevent injuries and accidents while then being able to send care straight away if anything bad does happen.
In Case Of An Emergency
It is always best to have plans and preparations in place for if anything happens. Put a list of important numbers by the phone, on the fridge, or anywhere you think they may need it, including, doctors, nurses, yourself, and even the next-door neighbor in case they need to get into the house quickly to assist. If something bad like a stroke happens which is fast-acting, you need a quick response and action to be taken immediately. If you need to manage their financials you can look into open banking.
Encourage Social Groups And Situations
Life can get quite lonely when you are elderly, isolation and depression is a normal aftereffect of this. Encourage and even go with them to start with a new class or group. It can be something they are interested in like knitting, baking, yoga, or even just an afternoon tea group for elderly people to get together and socialize. There are so many classes and meet-ups around so all you need to do is a little bit of research in your area and see what group takes their fancy. It will help them make friends, improve quality of life and be generally a lot happier. As they make friends they may even meet up with them outside of the groups and events giving them more purpose as well.
Keep An Eye On And Track Their Medication
If they need to take medication for any reason it is always best to keep track and be aware of what and how much they take. Situations often happen too much where their memory slips and they forget to take them or take too many so it is best to get one of those weekly pills sorting boxes and put them all in for them. Then they know exactly what to take and when, meaning silly mistakes can’t happen.
From big to small, there are some simple ways to help your elderly parents as they get older, make their life more enjoyable, happy and social. Something we would all want.
