My first trip to Chicago, Illinois was many years ago. I was seven, and had never been to a large city before. My family went to visit my mother’s sister Helen, and her husband George. The things I remember about that trip are that my uncle George was very handsome, he wore a hat, and there was a telephone in his office in downtown Chicago that had buttons on it that lit up when the phone rang. If you are taking your kids to Illinois, here are some fun things to do in Chicago that they might remember when they are grown up.

fun things to do in chicago

I’m always amazed at all of the fun a family with kids can have in cities. Chicago offers a wide range of family-friendly fun for all ages. Here are just some of the best things to enjoy while touring the city of Chicago.

Kohl Children’s Museum

Children’s museums are always rather popular to enjoy when you have kids in tow. The Kohl Children’s Museum is about 30 minutes outside of the city but well worth the trip. Featuring 17 exhibits that encourage creativity and learning, and a simulated Whole Foods Market, this children’s museum has it all. Don’t forget to check out the pet vet center located at Kohl Children’s Museum during your visit.

Gallagher Way

During the winter season in Chicago, you can enjoy the ice skating rink at Gallagher Way. This facility also features wreath making activities during the holiday season and has an ice cream shop just around the corner. It’s a wonderful location to enjoy the great outdoors in Chicago with kids.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

Do you ever wonder how a butterfly gets its colors? Or how turtles hibernate? Do you wonder how birds know where to migrate each year? Find out at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum! With water tables to splash around in and a butterfly greenhouse, your entire family will enjoy learning more about nature inside the warm, cozy atmosphere of this nature museum.

Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier

Take a trip on the Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier with your kids in Chicago. This Ferris Wheel stands 200 feet high and offers a 360-degree view of the beautiful city. With the enclosed gondolas for kid-safe fun, this is by far an experience worth enjoying as a fun thing to do in Chicago with kids before you leave.

River Jordan Camel Dairy Farm

There are other fun things to do in this city. There’s a botanical garden, The 606 trail for some walking, and other museums that your whole family will love. If you have time, take a drive out to Warsaw, Indiana. It’s about a 2 hour drive, but you’ll find the River Jordan Camel Dairy Farm there! They give tours, and have a gift shop. You may even get to ride a camel! Your kids will never forget that!
