If you love cooking and dream of owning a restaurant, here is how to stop cooking as a hobby and start your own restaurant. One recent study revealed that about 90% of Americans don’t love to cook. They would much rather go out to eat than spend time cooking for themselves and their families at home.

This is bad for their bank accounts, as the average person spends more than $3,000 each year eating out. But if you love to cook, it could be great news for yours!

how to stop cooking as a hobby and start your own restaurant

You can stop cooking as a hobby and start your own restaurant so that you can begin bringing in the big bucks by serving your food. Just make sure you take the proper steps when it comes to opening up your first eatery.

Check out how to get your own restaurant off the ground below.

Figure Out What Kind of Food You Want to Serve

When you’re cooking as a hobby, what kinds of foods do you like to make the most? Or better yet, which kinds of foods get the best reactions when you serve them to other people?

Maybe you make the best Italian dishes that people have ever tasted. Maybe your specialty is cheffing up delicious breakfast dishes. Or maybe you specialize in a very specific type of food, like soup or chicken wings.

Whatever the case may be, you should figure out what kind of food you’re going to serve in your restaurant before opening it up. You should have some signature dishes that you can use to wow those in your community.

Take a Look at the Competition in Your City

While you’re in the process of trying to figure out what kind of food you want to make in your restaurant, you should check out what other restaurants in your city have to offer. These establishments are, after all, going to be your competition soon.

There are more than 1 million restaurants in the U.S. at this time, which means your city likely has at least a couple dozen of them. You should try to find out what other restaurants aren’t offering so that you can step in and fill the gap that exists.

Market research is very important when opening a restaurant. The last thing you want to do is open up an Italian restaurant in a city that already has 12 of them or a diner in a city that already seems to have one on every corner.

Find the Right Location for Your Restaurant

Where do you want your restaurant to be? This is arguably the most important decision that you’re going to have to make when opening one up.

You can serve the best food in the world and offer the entire ambiance anyone could ever want inside your establishment. But if it’s located in a part of town that’s difficult to get to or way out of the way, it’s not going to matter.

Look for available spaces in the busier parts of town. Places that get a lot of foot traffic and places that are located on busy streets are ideal spots to put restaurants.

Come Up With a Great Name and Logo

At some point here, you’re going to need to come up with a great name and an incredible logo for your restaurant. Why not do it now?

Once you know what kind of food you’re going to serve and you have a location all picked out, you can create a name that spells out who you are and what you have to offer. Try to come up with something clever that will stick in people’s minds when they hear it.

After you’ve got a name, start the process of ordering a sign for your restaurant that features both your restaurant name and your logo as well as your contact information. Your restaurant will start to feel real when your sign arrives.

Invest in the Best Equipment for Your Business

You’re going to need to fill your restaurant with all types of equipment in order to prepare meals for your patrons.

You might be able to get away with not using the best equipment when you’re cooking as a hobby. But that’s not an option for restaurant owners.

Look around for everything from the best stoves and ovens to the best mixers and blenders you can buy. You’ll need to find a great commercial refrigerator, too, that can store all the food you’ll serve.

These tips should make it easier for you to track down the right commercial fridge for the job.

Design a Restaurant That Is Warm and Welcoming

Do you have a vision for what the inside of your restaurant is going to look like? If so, sit down and try to sketch it out.

If not, sit down with an interior designer and have them help you come up with something amazing. You want your restaurant to feel warm and welcoming from the moment people walk in.

Outside of great food, your guests are also going to crave the aforementioned ambiance. Make sure you give it to them.

Find Creative Ways to Market Your Restaurant to the Masses

As long as you’ve followed all the other steps listed here, you should be just about ready to open up your doors to customers. But before you do, you should make sure there are going to be customers waiting to come inside.

Market your restaurant in whatever ways you can. From running ads in local newspapers to using social media marketing to get the word out about your business, there are so many ways to market a restaurant in 2019.

Cooking as a Hobby Is Fun—But So Is Cooking to Make a Profit!

Have you been cooking as a hobby for years now while secretly dreaming about running your own restaurant one day?

Turn your dreams into a reality by finding the right space for a restaurant and opening one up. You’ll be able to serve your specialties to a much wider audience and grow as a chef over time.
