If you have ever had a surgery that means that you’re out of action for a while, or have a sickness like flu, or an injury that stops you from doing as much as you normally would, then it can be a really frustrating time. It can be hard not being able to do what you normally would, and it can be frustrating when you are normally quite a busy person and now you have to take a step back, for a while at least. So if this sounds like you, or you know you’ll be on bed-rest or a while soon with a surgery coming up, then here are some tips to help you stay positive while injured or unwell.

Think about the long term
This will be something that you have to keep reminding yourself, especially if you have something that is a long-term illness or sickness. In reality, the scale of this thing in your life will be something that is very short term. So being able to set your goals for the long term can be something that can help in a huge way, for staying positive in the short term. Your goal could be to just be able to do more than the day before, or it could be something grander and more specific, but it can make a difference to your mindset.
Still enjoy yourself
It is important to keep eating well when you are sick or are injured. You are what you eat, as they say, and if you are trying to look after yourself and eat well when you are unwell, then it will make a difference. Of course, one meal or a treat that is a little off-track isn’t something that should make you feel bad about yourself. Guilty feelings aren’t going to help when you are unwell. Stressing about your injury or illness and not being able to exercise or do things as you normally would, will probably mean more damage and a negative effect on your body. Try to do things to enjoy yourself as much as possible.
Ask for help
It can be hard to ask for help when you are in need. People may tell you to let them know what they can do to help, but how many of us would actually let someone know that we needed help? So instead, get into the mood for asking for help. It could be arranging for someone to come in to visit you, or maybe looking into something like paid home care if you don’t have family and friends that live close by. Then at least you could guarantee that someone will come in to visit you from time to time.
Use your mind
When you aren’t able to be as active as you might be normally, then it is a good idea to make sure that you are as active as you can be, but active with your mind. Using your mind is so important, as it can help to reduce stress, as well as help you to learn, stay alert, and relieve some boredom. This might be a good time to learn a new hobby that you can do while sitting, or that is not strenuous. Keeping your mind active will help you stay positive.
