Your Dekalb Farmer's Market

Yesterday after my Cat Scan appointment at Emory, we drove over to Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market to have lunch and do a little shopping. I love YDFM for many reasons, but the herb, spice, and seasonings wall has to be the top one.

I love that they sell their herbs and spices by the pound. They are packaged in these deli cups, and are really cheap as far as spices and herbs go. I bought 1o different herbs and spices and my bill was $13.87, a lot less than I would pay at any of the local grocery chains. Take a look at my list:

  • Ground Ginger   $1.28 for .32 lb
  • Cumin                      .96 for .24 lb
  • Gumbo File            2.74 for .29 lb
  • Ground Mustard    .70 for .23 lb
  • Mango Powder      1.14 for .28 lb
  • Oregano                    .66 for .15 lb
  • Cinnamon               1.33 for .45 lb
  • Sage                           1.13 for .29 lb
  • Pumpkin Pie          2.58 for .43 lb
  • Golden Flax Seed    1.38 for .63 lb

I love ginger in stir fried dishes. It just makes it taste better. At this price, I can use it every day, if I wanted to.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon

That is almost a half a pound of cinnamon. It’s not as good as Saigon Cinnamon, but it will work for most dishes. Where I want a more flavorfull cinnamon taste, I’ll stiff use the Saigon, but this is good for everyday.

Powdered Mango
Powdered Mango

I bought the powdered mango because I have never seen it before, or even heard of it. I am one of those people who love to try new things. So, I will be looking for recipes for using Mango Powder. If you know of any, please leave a link in the comments for me to check it out. Have you ever heard of Powdered Mango?

I haven’t been to a Farmers Market in ages! You did get an awesome buy with those spices. The price of them in the store is outrageous these days and keeps me from having a stocked spice cabinet. I have never heard of Mango Powder, but the cinnamon would be great for making your own Cinnamon Sugar!

Good deal! When was the last time I’ve been to a Farmer’s Market – maybe 20 years ago? There aren’t many in my area, and I don’t have a car. I hear there are some in the spring and summer in Greenwich Village. I’ll have to look it up when the warm weather comes. You’ve got me in the mood now for frsh food and wonderful seasonings!

I wonder if powdered mango would work in smoothies? Salad dressing? Maybe a fruit salad? I have no idea, just throwing out some thoughts!

I have never heard of powdered mango. I bet it would be good on teriyaki and rice dishes. I have also never bought my spices at a farmer’s market. I feel like I’m missing out, looking at those prices and quantities.

There is a HUGE farmers market in Dallas, but I can not drive myself there. Occasionally my husbands grandmother will take us and I load up on things like Raw local honey! YUM!!!

I hit farmer’s markets whenever I can. Their produce is so good, and their home made foods are great.

Oh Karen, you have made me super homesick! I am from Atlanta and we lived around the corner from the YDFM. We would go every Sat with the kids and make a day of it. We have nothing even remotely like it in Knoxville.

I adore my Farmer’s Market! During the summer months, I find the most unusual (and delicious) fruit hybrids. I’ve never heard of mango powder, but now I’m going to be on the hunt for it.

I think Farmer’s Market’s are the best thing in the entire world. I’m just waiting to buy the local olives I love at mine. There is nothing more delicious and more fresh.

Farmers Markets are the best! Sometimes you find the best things at Farmers markets that you can’t find anywhere else.

Perhaps you can add powdered mango into a smoothie? I would imagine it adds a burst of flavor to sweeter dishes…

I love a good farmers market! Our small town one doesn’t have a ton of options but there is one about 30 minutes away that has a huge selection.

I love the Farmer’s Market when they are open. They are not open right now. But I have a very good one not far from my house, and they have great items. I love Mangos. I would love to get the Mango Powder and make something with it.
