This post is not sponsored in any way. We just like Home Depot!

The last time I talked about our home improvements, it was about the new windows and doors. We have had several contacts from Home Depot since then, and have an appointment for our windows to be installed on October 7th. While I think this is exciting, it is also a stressful time. Both Fabgrandpa and I have ideas for what we want, and sometimes those ideas don’t exactly mesh. I think that would be true in any family, and it is something you should consider as a given in any home repair, remodel or redecoration project.

This is how my counter top looks now, Yuck!

In this photo, you can see how bad the existing counter top looks. And yes, it IS clean, it just does not look like it. You can scrub and wipe it all day long and it still looks like that.

Last week we went back to Home Depot and talked to Nicki in the Kitchen department. We are replacing our counter tops. To get started with that, we had to take measurements of the counters we want new tops for, and take those measurements in with us. Nicki did an estimate of the cost based on which counter top we picked out, and our measurements that we took. The bottom line for the counter top install, which included a $5 per square foot charge for removing and hauling away the existing counter top, was $235. We were actually surprised by the removal charge, but what are you gonna do? We can remove it and don’t have a truck to haul it off with. Another thing that threw me off was that the prices were for SQUARE feet, not LINEAR feet, which makes a huge difference. We have 19 LINEAR feet, but 47 SQUARE feet.

We also talked to Nicki about a new sink. She showed us all the sinks they sell, and we picked one that comes with the faucets and drain baskets, and “all-in-one” sink kit. We had to buy the sink and take it home with us, so that it would be on site when the counter top guy came to do precise measurements. And, she told us a different person, a plumber, will be scheduled by the Home Depot project manager, Tina, to come out and install the new sink the day after the counter tops are installed. The total we spent on Friday was $1321.48, and there should be no additional charges for the counter top and sink install, unless the measurements we took were way off either way.

The new sink.

On Monday, we received a call from the counter top people to set up an appointment for their guy to come out and measure for the counter top so they can be made to fit our kitchen cabinets. They told us he would be here between 12 and 4 pm. We also received a call from the plumber to set an appointment for installing the new sink.

This is the color I picked for my new counter. It is called Bordeaux Juparana.

Fabgrandpa told them that we don’t have an installation date for the counters yet, so we can’t make an appointment with them yet. I don’t know what was said on that conversation exactly but the plumber told Fabgrandpa that they would contact Tina at Home Depot to let her know we were not happy. That triggered a call from Tina to find out what the problem was, and she assured us that the plumber would NOT come until after the counters were installed.

On Tuesday, the counter top guy called and told me he would be there around 3 pm. We had to have everything removed from the counter, so he could get good measurements. He got there a little earlier than that, and took some pretty precise measurements. He showed us that one of the cabinets was installed about 1 inch away from the wall, and explained that he would have to make a specially made back splash for that counter because the counters were only 25″ deep. He wanted us to know about that so it would not be a surprise when the new counters are delivered. Our new counters should take about 14 days to fabricate. So, now we wait.
