We got up early, before daylight, to get ready for the day. It’s good thing we got an early start, too because we had some troubles to start out with.
First we couldn’t get the sway bars on the new hitch properly because of the angle of the hill in the back yard. Then, after we moved the trailer a bit, the trailer battery died. It has been on the tongue of the trailer since December 2006 when we bought it. Fabgrandpa checks the battery regularly so we have no idea why it just decided to give it up this morning. Since the battery was dead, the electric hitch wouldn’t work.
Fabgrandpa took one of the batteries out of the truck and linked it up with jumper cables to the one on the hitch so we could jack the trailer up enough to get the sway bars on. Then he had to put the battery back in the truck and fasten it down again. A lot of work, but at least we got out of the yard and only lost a half an hour from the estimated time of departure.
We stopped in Guntersville, Alabama and bought a new battery. It cost up$76, but we cooked breakfast on the side of the road and had chef salads in a parking lot that I had made ahead and stowed in the fridge so I guess we came out closer to even that way.
We had planned to go all the way to West Memphis, Arkansas today, but decided to get off the road early in Corinth, Mississippi because we were both tired. Once we stopped, we discovered that the brake cable on the trailer was broken in two. I don’t know if it is related to the hitch problem we had back in January or not, but it is one more thing that needs to be fixed. Tomorrow, we hope to get to Little Rock.

i just discovered your page while looking for directions on “How to make a T-shirt quilt” for my grand-daughter.
Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy your road trip.
