I Got The Sewing Machine Set Up Today

The lving room is the temporary sewing room.

I spent the first part of the day moving my sewing stuff out of the trailer and into the house. I set up the sewing machine and other sewing stuff in the living room temporarily. I have sooo much room now to sew. I was ready to make something, anything, and Emily asked me to make her a breast feeding cover, which is a pretty drape to use when you are breast feeding baby in public.

This is the pattern I used.

We shopped for fabric while we were out yesterday, and got enough of this cute fabric to make the cover, a diaper bag, a zippered bag, and a changing pad. Monkeys!

How cute is that?

After I got the sewing area set up, I started on the cover. It was such an easy pattern to make. Of course, the the thing that took the longest was the cutting. After that, it was all straight lines, and some gathering for the ruffle. Finished in about two hours.

All finished!

This one has a piece of boning in the top so that it will stay open. That lets Mom see what’s going on with baby but prevents everyone else from seeing in.

The straps

I used D rings to make the strap adjustable. This was really quick and easy to make, and will be quite useful for Emily when Baby Rascoe gets here.

It turned out so nice! I love the idea of using boning to keep it open! Those monies are adorable 🙂

What a clever idea. And how fun to spread out the sewing while not hearing FabGrandpa ask where he’s going to sleep tonight. 😉

What adorable fabric. It turned out so cute.

I am going to attempt to make a skirt and would love to add some ruffle to it. How hard was that?

Making ruffles is not hard. If you have a zigzag stitch on your machine, set it to the widest setting. Take a piece of yarn or sting that is about 10 inches longer than the width of the fabric. Pin it about 1/2 inch from the long edge of the fabric, on one end of the fabric with about 4 or 5 inches over the short edge of the fabric. Hold the string taut while you stitch the zigzag stitch over the string, being careful not to catch the string in the stitches. You want to be able to pull that string up to gather the fabric.

You can see a tutorial of sorts in this post: https://fabgrandma.com/2011/02/how-to-make-a-ruffled-pillow-part-1/

This is great. I’ve always wanted to learn how to sew. I imagine being able to make my own dresses and shirts. But all I can do is dream about it because I never learned how. I love going in stores and looking at fabrics though.

Very pretty!! I bought one for myself before I had my daughter but I always had such a hard time getting it all to work right. 🙂 If it was this beautiful I would have tried harder. I just used a tank and a shirt and blanket to keep covered in public.
