A downdraft came into my backyard and blew down a few trees! I thought it was a tornado
I tornado hit when I was in college…I was at a friend’s house and like idiots we went outside to watch the funnel traveling down a highway! Youth! We think we are immortal. 🙂 Thank you.

I was actually in a tornado once. It came in our backyard, and my mother (who isn’t too smart) pulled me across the yard to go in the house. That was a big mistake. I was actually sucked into it. Thank goodness it was a very small one. It is really true, it does sound like a railroad. The wind had picked up sand, it was moving so fast, it actually felt like glass. That was the only thing that really hurt me. I was very lucky. I have alot more stories that have happened, like a eighty year old cottonwood tree falling through my house during a storm, both of my parents were struck by lightening, (my father was hurt a bit, but both recovered). I have lived through alot. I don’t take any weather lightly.

A few years ago a tornado came within a mile of my house. It was frightening to see the damage it did to the homes in its path.

As a child we often went to a neighbor’s cellar during storms. Once I remember going to our church’s basement.
The storm I remembermost was the F5 that went through Moore, OK, and many other areas, on May 3, 1999. We lived in Edmond, OK which is north of Oklahoma City. We stood on our front porch and watched the storm moving in a northeasterly direction. We knew people in the path that Gary England was telling us it would go. We called people and told them to please take shelter. We contacted one woman who was going to head home from Edmond and invited her to come to our house instead. I don’t knowhow many people died that day, but even though I was not in the path, it was the worse storm I ever wanted to be even near.
Having been raised in tornado alley, I have great respect for storms, but also know how to watch and listen and be prepared to find shelter. Thank you weathermen for all you do to keep us safe.
OH man, I wish you would. I’ve never had the opportunity (I say that like it’s a positive thing) to even SEE a tornado, much less be in one.. Andy has though… HOWEVER…… Living in the Houston area, hurricanes are the SCARIEST THINGS EVAH!
Hurricake IKE…. Oh. My. Gosh. Talk about Scary! Andy and I took the kiddos to my grandparents house, because we lived in a manufactured home at the time.. We had only 3 kiddos at the time. We thought it would pass, we were far inland enough to be no big deal.. ha.
I was MID gallbladder attack when IKE went RIGHT over us. I was in pain, worried about the kids, no electricity, no cell service. There was a lot of crash boom bang, and then nothing. We thought it was over, but it was just the eye.. So calm and quiet.
Then it started back up, and there was a HUGE crash boom bang…. and a tree fell right on the house where I was!
Everything turned out ok for us.. not REAL damage, but that was crazy!
Still want to be a storm chaser though!!!
we were driving home in a rainstorm so bad that we had to pull over to the side of the road and wait for it to stop

I lived in Oklahoma for a brief time when I was a kid, and doing dumb things like most kids do, we chased tornadoes… as I reflect back, it was pretty scary!
I’ve lived most of my life in the deep south and have seen many scary storms. One of the scariest was an F4 (some say F5) tornado that tore through my town in Louisiana in the late 70’s. I was in southeast Texas for Hurricane Rita. I was in Houston for Tropical Storm Allison–less wind than a hurricane, but she moved slowly and dropped a lot of rain. My son and his family live on Galveston Island and had to run from Hurricane Ike–then had serious damage to contend with. I’m not a stranger to serious storms, but I like to hunker down, if I can—not like these Storm Chasers 😉

The hurricane in 2011 was my most terrifying experience!
The snowstorm on Halloween was awful!! Lost power, couldn’t get my car up the hill home, and LOTS of tree damage
The most frightening storm experience I’ve had is when the occasional hurricane comes through. We are lucky that we never sustained damage or got hurt, but they are scary.

Just last summer we had a crazy storm/tornado in our area, and of course, I had to drive in it! First the hail came down, then the rain, I was terrified but slowly got home! We live in Illinois, so usually we just get a few warnings here and there but lately we’ve had a ton!

A tornado hit years ago when I was a teen. Stupidly I stood and peeked out the glass cut out in our front door and watched it’s fury. It only lasted a few minutes and was soo loud. Less than 30min later the sun was shining and the sky looked as if nothing had ever happened. Our house was left untouched, but our neighbors home across the street was totally gone. Thankfully no one was hurt.

When my kiddos were about 6 months and 2 and a half, we had a tornado happen right outside our home. My husband and I were outside holding the babies while we watched the clouds churn. All of a sudden, we saw the tornado form. It was truly amazing, but scary at the same time. We barely got indoors before the hail started coming down. I love different kinds of weather and Storm Chasers is one of my sons favorite shows. Thanks for this opportunity.

We were stuck on the interstate during a hurricane last summer . Trees were down everywhere and at one point we tried to take a local road and ran over some power lines. We ended up back on the interstate a short time later and sat for over two hours while watching the trees beside the road sway wildly. We were so thankful that when we reached our hotel late that night.

My most frightening tornado story comes from when I was living in Beltsville, MD with my toddler children at the time and a tornado came right through my back yard. We had no warning. I heard the wind and knew we were hiding in the hallway because we didn’t have a basement and our bathroom had windows. By the time it was over 5 people died.. the high school in Laurel was flat, all of our neighbors needed new roofs and our house- the smallest and oldest withstood all of it and we had no damage

I have been on duty during tornado warnings, in a hospital which was used as a shelter for local residents. It was more busy than scary for me, since we were transferring patients to the basement. The tornado hit outside of town rather than anywhere near the hospital.

My most scarey storm experience was when my son was young and I was at work. We had a bad storm coming in so I left work to get home before it hit. I was passing the last exit off the freeway before my home exit which was about 10 miles down the freeway yet….I saw the wall cloud coming in…thought I had time to make it….but about 1/2 way to my exit….the storm hit. It turned black….could hardly see the school bus in front of me. We all came to a stand still on the freeway. The wind was so strong felt like the van was going to topple over. I was so scared when the school bus in front of me…the back of the bus moved into the other lane from the wind. 🙁 After about 5 mintues of darkness and wind and rain …..it let up a bit and we could see enough to move again. It was the worst I have been in and very scarey. Thank goodness I had close neighbors and my son went to their home and was safe in their basement. Next time I will take shelter!

I don’t really have any terribly scary thunderstorm or tornado stories. Growing up in the midwest, storms are just part of life during the summer. I guess my worst was just a couple years ago when I got a bad feeling from a storm and decided to go to my parents house to ride out the storm in a basement. It turned out to be a pretty bad storm but not horrible, and I actually had to clean up some water that made its way to my parents basement. The weird thing though about that storm was that a couple of my co-workers got really bad feelings about that storm too and actually went to basements (they don’t have basements at home either) to ride out the storm. None of us usually are too bothered by storms, but we all got a bad vibe from that one.

Living in Oklahoma, tornadoes are somewhat common. Last spring, a tornado formed 5 miles from our house, and traveled many miles, leaving a pathway of destruction. I believe it was later classified as an F-4. Here is a link with some info and pix: http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/151813/20110525/massive-tornadoes-hit-central-oklahoma-photos.htm
Our home and property were NOT damaged in this storm.

Luckily I’ve avoided any encounters with extremely dangerous storms, but this past Thanksgiving I had a pretty scary drive to the airport when I got stuck in a major snow and ice storm – my car slid off the road three or four times, and a 60-mile drive took me about 3 hours to complete.

I was working in Home Health and had to travel in the country to admit a client and continue the IV antibiotics that were started in the Hospital. It was snowing and the weather report predicted a snow storm. Home health was closing but this admission was a priority. I drove following the instructions the family had given me. It was slow traveling but I had driven in snow and took my time but it kept snowing and snowing. When I finally wanted to stop and turn around , I could not see anywhere to turn around. No farmer driveways . I couldn’t see the difference between the road and the ditches . I had no choice but to travel on. At the T intersection where I was to turn off . I had to guess where the middle of the road was and made the turn. I made it there and by the time I left several hours later the snow plows were out and marking the road ways and it had stopped snowing.
I’ve never been around a tornado, though I did survive hurricane ike. Thanks for the giveaway.
Wow I would have to say the most frightening one was last year. We were all in bed sleeping and I was woke up by this huge gust of wind that shook our whole house! I mean it was REALLY scary. Then this powerful storm just hit but didn’t last long. We were all up by this time! Our electric got knocked out from it. Then we started getting phone calls that our electric would be out for a few hours. Not even a mile from my house electric poles were ripped up from the ground blocking our main road (I’m not joking like 15 were ripped up from the ground), power lines hanging down, a HUGE brand new barn was shredded to pieces, a camper was picked up thrown down by a pond with only the wheels left flipped over, huge trees on top of cars & blocking roads, etc. There was damage EVERYWHERE! We later found out it was a Tornado that came through. That’s scary because we usually don’t get that type of weather here just bad storms. We had some awful ones last year, I’m scared for summer to even come! We don’t have a basement or anything to keep us safe, so we always go to Wal-Mart. I’m just scared that we won’t have time again like this Tornado that came through. We got caught in a bad storm (said Tornado warning) so we headed to Wal-Mart. It started to get really bad as soon as we pulled in the parking lot. Shopping carts were loose going like 10-15 mph and slammed the side of our passenger door & I mean slammed! It shook our whole car, we had a dent in it like the size of a laundry basket (lol) I lost everything out of my pockets/purse just trying to hurry & get inside. My hubby was stuck out in the car & we didn’t know if he was going to be okay or not. I’m just a nervous wreck thinking back & what this year holds! Sorry so long but this is what happened all last year here. It seem like we were hopping in the car to leave for Wal-Mart every other day!
I have pics of last years damage including funnel cloud if anyone wants to see!

I was having dinner with some friends at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor when we were hit with the tail end of a hurricane. It was incredible to watch the servers quickly move everyone inside and get the storm shades down for protection. It was a little scary, but we felt perfectly secure inside. Driving back to D.C. in the storm that evening was difficult.

The most frightening was a tornado that went over our house but thankfully did not damage it. Trees were downed but missed the house. Others a quarter mile away were devastated.

My most frightening storm experience was when Charley hit Orlando a while back. Our house didn’t get hit badly – all we lost was a few shingles and a tree. However, right in the middle of the storm the transformer that happened to be directly behind our backyard (we backed on to a cow pasture) blew and boy what a scary noise that was! We thought everything was going to go.

My husband and I were walking out on a nature trail and were way out and noticed the sky turning dark. About 15 minutes later a policeman drives on the trail and yells “get off the trail, we have had a tornado warning!” So my husband and I ran all the way back to our car. Later found out a tornado touched down about 5-10 miles from where we were!

We were still in college and my husband had a job interview in the city about 2 hours away. After class we headed toward the city and, in a time crunch, we hit a pouring rain. It was so bad we had to pull over and my husband do his interview partially by cell phone in the car.
My freshman year at college our campus was hit by a severe tornado. We had to find ways home after the storm because there were no phones and we couldn’t have cars. We had just come inside the dorm before it hit – no warning at all. Very lucky.

my most frightening tornado experience was last spring. I was outside checking the weather, and out of nowhere came a small tornado. It wasnt very big, it just scared me. It was the same day the Joplin tornado happened. I watched it come in from the west from a swatch of trees. You couldnt see it before, because the trees were in the way. It luckily moved away from us.

The worst storm was in the middle of summer and although we are in the midwest it looked like a hurricane outside. The rain was blowing straight across and the trees were bent nearly to the ground. Many very old trees that had withstood tornadoes were totally uprooted.

I was 7 years old and shopping at a mall with my mother, the power went out and my mom being the shopping trooper she was stayed so we could finish getting what she wanted. We left the mall and started driving home the wind was horrible, blowing the car all over the place, some how we made it home safely. We got out of the car and left the garage to enter the house when a tornado flew right over the garage and house. The tornado hit the house directly acroos the street from mine and tore the entire second story off leaving only the basement. It continued on a path of destruction through the town I lived in and killed a classmate of mine. It appears that as we were driving home the tornado was right behind us and we never even knew it was there.

I remember living in Louisiana and we had a tornado warning and my little girl was playing in the yard with one of her friends, I heard of the warning and the wind started to pick up and I went out to get her and she was not there. I was frantic! Across the field I saw a funnel cloud forming and went into panic because she was no where to be found. After a few seconds here she comes out of her friends house and started running toward me, she knew that she was not allowed in peoples houses but I was relieved that I found her. We went into the apartment just before the pool furniture was flying everywhere. And the wind did sound like a train coming . We went into the dining room because there were no windows, and withing minutes it was all over. We went outside and could not believe the damages around the apartment but we were thankful that there were no damages to our windows and apartment building..

I have never been in a tornado but my most frightening storm story was a Dust Storm while traveling through Idaho. We were driving along and out of nowhere we were surrounded by a dust storm. We did our best to get off the road and avoid all of the vehicles around us that had stopped partially on the road. We made it off the road just as a semi-truck came barreling past us almost clipping of our side mirror.

As we started to drive on the radio they were telling everyone to pull over and get in the ditch, because a tornado was coming through. My Dad just kept driving and it was scary, but we were safe.

Hello, how are you today? Thank you for this opportunity. My most frightening storm experience was ‘Hurricane Diana’ of 1984. Here on the South-Eastern coast of North Carolina. The hurricane was fore-casted to go out to sea and dissipate. We all relaxed, but the hurricane strengthened in the warm Atlantic waters. It circled and returned even stronger. That and a few others were definitely scary.
