What the heck is that thing?

You can believe it or not, but this is the first time I have ever seen an armadillo. Well, except for the squashed ones on the side of the road.  But this thing was was in my yard yesterday, just poking around.

By gosh, I think it's an armadillo!

It was amazingly not afraid of me much, so I could get pretty close to it. But, thank goodness for the zoom on my camera, because I really didn’t want to get too close.

Yes, That IS an armadillo!

Happy New Year, Armadillo!

Very cool sighting and what an awesome and unusual animal. I’ve only seen stuffed ones.

    Have a Happy New Year!

We saw a number of them in Texas. I think they are so cute but can do a lot of damage to your yard. They’re basically blind so if you’re upwind from them they can’t see you or smell you.

Sandra, I believe that because this little guy was rooting up the whole yard!

    Hi Karen,
Here in TX we say “Why did the chicken cross the road?”
The answer is “To show the armadillo that it could be done!”

He/she is lovely, thank you for sharing. Penny.

Didn’t know they had armadillos in your neck of the woods. Took me a long time to see one too that wasn’t a pancake in the road. 🙂

How cute. Interestingly enough, I just read about armadillos this week in a novel. Did you know that they are the ONLY other mammal to naturally contract leprosy (i.e. Hansens disease)?

Cool! I have never seen one before, not even in a zoo. I get an assortment of critters in my yard since I feed the birds, but I am sure it is too cold in WI for one of these dudes! Have Happy New Year!!

I was excited when I saw my first (live) one too! They are pretty cool things — like something out of ancient times (like alligators, but not as scary. Very nice pictures.

Happy New Year to you and Fab Grandpa too. I hope 2011 brings you peace and joy (and lots of photo ops!)

Aren’t they cool? They won’t hurt. They used to wander through our chemical plant – now that was a strange site! Happy New Year!
