This post is brought to you by Acu-rite.
For most of my adult life, I have been a weather geek. I have watched the Weather Channel all day at times, just because I love the weather reports. I can remember very clearly sitting on the sofa with my son when he was about 3 years old, watching the evening news weather report. The weather guy was talking about a “monster storm” that was coming our way. My son was too afraid to sleep that night, worried about that monster! I also worry about the monster storms, the tornadoes that frequent our part of the country. I try to stay abreast of the the weather conditions, no matter where I am, so that I will know if there is a storm coming.
Then one day, I received an email from Acu-Rite, asking me if I would like to review one of their Wireless Weather Stations that is compatible with Weather Underground, I just couldn’t believe it! I usually just respond to emails by sending emails back, but this time I picked up the telephone and called them to discuss this opportunity.
So, Fabgrandpa and I received the Weather Station, and read all the instructions about installing it and setting it up. The outdoor unit is powered by a tiny solar panel that charges 4 AAA batteries in a waterproof compartment. (Rechargeable batteries not included) The data that it collects is sent to the Internet Bridge by a wireless signal.
The Internet Bridge connects to your router by an ethernet cable, and sends the data to y our computer, where you have the AcuRite App software installed. You can look at all the data on any computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone that has the app installed. There is also a beautiful full color display unit that plugs into your computer via a USB port. All of the pieces work together to collect the data and display it so that you can keep up to date with the weather in your area.
Once we got the outdoor unit installed, we set up the Internet Bridge, and hooked up the Indoor Display Unit, and downloaded the AcuRite software. And then, this is what our display looked like:
This unit shows us the wind speed, the temperature outdoors, the humidity, the barometric pressure, and the rainfall amount. There is also a weather ticker across the bottom that tells you historic data, and other messages. The last step was setting up our Internet Bridge to share data to Weather Underground. Weather Underground is a free app for your smartphone, that shows the weather wherever your are. You can see the Personal Weather Stations on the map, and choose the one closest to you. You can see Fabgrandma Wildcat Rd on this map, which is the location of my weather station in my yard!
Or, you can click on the station and see the full weather report for that area:
If you are a weather geek like me, I know you are convinced by now that you need to buy one of these Weather Environment Systems. The good news is, that they are all on sale right now, and to sweeten the pot, Acu-Rite is giving Fabgrandma readers an extra $10 off using the discount code GRANDMASRULE. This discount code is valid thru 9/10/2105, so hurry up and get yours now!

I remember when I was in middle school there was a bad storm passing us. My mom called me outside to see a funnel cloud. It’s the same tornado thay leveled Plainfield, IL in the early 90s.
Sadie Slays says
I remember one particularly nasty thunderstorm from my youth where the sky turned this freakishly green color. I had never seen anything like it before or since.
The next day, I found out that the storm spawned an F4 tornado that literally leveled the town next to mine. I quickly drove down there to survey the damage, and it looked like a nuclear bomb went off. There was nothing left except building foundations.
I’ve been extremely paranoid about tornadoes ever since.

A weatherstsaion that automatically allows others to see the exact c9ndutions at my location would be very helpful to many including the NWS for my area. Steve Pearsall says
My biggest weather memory was from when I was about 6 years old. A large hurricane passed thru our area. My father put plywood over all of the windows, we filled up a bunch of bottles with water, put fresh batteries in radios and flashlights. The eye of the hurricane passed right over our area and my father opened the door and let us go outside for the short time the eye was overhead. You could see clouds all around the horizon but it was clear and sunny over head. Then when the eyewall started closing in we all went back inside and the winds and rain started howling again.

One night when I was a kid (yea a long time ago) I can remember being woken up by one heck of a storm. We lived in TN and in a two story house. I can remember the motion of the house twisting in the wind and lightening striking the gutter outside my window. We retreated to the ground floor and away from the windows until the storm dissipated. The next morning the trailer park a mile down the road from where I lived was decimated. We were really close.

My teenage son has been obsessed with the weather since he was a little boy. Even as a teen he’s still fascinated by it and watches weather reports all the time. He even makes up his own weather maps based on data and information that he finds. He’s really good at it. We always tell him he should be a weatherman when he grows up.
We’ve had weathers stations before but NOTHING close to how awesome this station is. This is like a weather fanatics dream station.
Thank you for the opportunity. FINGERS CROSSED!
Kimberly says
I miss commented before.
Biggest weather memory was traveling with all my aunts, uncles and cousins to New England for a huge family vacation only to have to turn around and go back (literally) the same day due to a hurricane heading in our direction.
Losing power for 3 days during Hurricane Floyd was also memorable.
Ellen Christian (@ellenblogs) says
My biggest weather memory is the ice storm where we lost power for days.
Joely Smith says
In the 90’s we had a huge tornado rip through my part of town – literally a half mile from my apartment at the time. Part of a high school was knocked out – thankfully school was not in session at the time but several homes around the area got hit. I live in Tornado Alley so we are always prepared for a tornado or even high winds to cause damage. It was very scary and being in an apartment there was really no where to go at the time.
I have pets and always worry what I would do as our home now has no basement. If neighbors are home we have places to go but I still worry about my fur kids.
I would love one of these weather stations! Not only due to the safety factor but the inner geek in me calls for one.
Thanks for the chance and good luck to all who enter!
