You’ve studied the maps, saved your money, and booked your flight reservations. You’ve been waiting for this vacation anxiously for months. Whether you’re vacationing at the beach or need a passport to get into a foreign country, there’s always the possibility you’re going to contract some type of illness. So, when you start feeling a little queasy after a couple of days on your Nassau vacation, you might not be sure what to do. Luckily, there are quite a few things you can do to feel better while sick on vacation. We’ll tell you a few of them below.
Stay Hydrated
Making sure to stay hydrated when you’re sick is key to feeling better before your vacation is over. If you’re nauseous, take small sips of water instead of gulping the water down for the best results. If possible, drink something with plenty of electrolytes in it, which is a drink you should be able to get at any local store in the area. If you’re vacationing somewhere out of the United States, make sure to only drink bottled water, as tap water in some locations isn’t safe and will only make you sicker. Check the CDC list of safe countries to drink the water before you do at the least.
Always Be Aware of the Warning Signs
It’s essential to educate yourself on the country you’re vacationing in before you even book your plane ticket to travel there. For example, if you’re going to be in a country that has a high risk for malaria, make sure you’ve researched it well, and know all the warning signs and symptoms that you might have this disease.
Whether you feel your symptoms are mild or not, it’s best to be checked out by a doctor before the symptoms get worse. This is true for any country that has an illness that you can possibly contract while visiting. It’s best to be safe instead of sorry when on vacation.
Eat Well
Even if you don’t feel well, you need to keep something on your stomach if you can. Try to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and soups. Stay away from the local fare of the country you’re in, especially if it’s not food you’re used to eating, as it can upset your stomach in the best of circumstances, but especially when you’re already feeling sick.
Stay Connected With Your Loved Ones
When you’re on vacation, especially overseas, and you’re sick, it’s extremely important to keep in contact with your loved ones. They need to be kept in the loop in case you need some kind of assistance or get worse. Ensure that if you’re traveling with someone, they have access to the information needed to contact your family in case you have to go to the hospital. Make sure your family knows your symptoms and just how sick you are if they need to make arrangements to get you back to the United States and home where you belong.
Contact Your Insurance Company
If you feel like you’re going to have to go to the doctor or end up at the hospital, contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Tell them what’s going on. Some insurance companies will tell you to go to the hospital and let them know what happens when you get there. Keep all receipts and any medical forms you get at the hospital or at the pharmacy, so your insurance company can reimburse you when you’re back in the states and able to talk to them.
Getting sick while on vacation is horrible, but it doesn’t have to be a disaster if you follow the tips above.
