While I have planted flowers and vegetables in my gardens where ever I have lived over the years, I have never started seeds indoors before the growing season started. I am too impatient to wait for seeds to sprout after they have been planted outdoors. Every year until this year, I have bought plants at the garden center so that I have immediate visible results from my efforts. For some reason, I decided to give the seeds planted in flats a try this time. We will see how that works out.
Since we decided to plant some perennials around our new fountain, I planted Coreopsis, Shasta Daisy, and Butterfly Weed seeds. Those seeds were SO TINY! Next time I do this I definitely need to add some tweezers to my list of tools I need. The rest of the little pots were seeded with Cosmos, an annual. I love Cosmos, and have planted them in flower gardens I have had over the years.
I planted some English Peas and Swiss Chard directly in large pots outside because it is the right time for them to be planted. If things go just right with them, we should be harvesting peas and chard in about 50 days! When I get out on the porch to work with the garden stuff again in a couple of days, I’ll be planting the next round of flats with Nasturtium, Zinnia, and Yellow Squash seeds.
The last thing I planted was red potatoes. I had this bag of red potatoes that sprouted, so I saved them to plant when it was the right time for them here in Georgia. I forgot to take a picture of the basket after it was planted. I went to the Dollar Store and bought a couple of inexpensive laundry baskets to use as planters for my potatoes. I used a nail and a very sharp knife to cut some holes in the bottom of the basket. Then I put a trash bag in the basket, and poked holes in the bag where the holes in the basket were. I pulled the top of the basket over the top of the basket. This is so that the composted cow manure I used to plant the potatoes in won’t fall out of the basket. I put about three inches of soil in the basket, and planted the potatoes in that. As the plants grow, I will add soil , until the basket is full. At the end of summer, I should have a basket full of potatoes. I hope so.

I love everything about Spring: Longer days, green growing things, birds singing. I don’t have a spot to plant since I live in a townhouse. I wish you luck with your growing.
I love your selection of perennials for your fountain. You’ll have beautiful blooms for most of the growing season, if not this year, then next year, for sure. And good luck with your early season veggies! Here in Maine, the growing season is really short, and it’s still too soon to start seeds. I’ll just have to live vicariously through your garden. I do love Cosmos. Smart to start the seed inside. I used to work for Ferry-Morse Seed Co. Not having a green thumb and living in the RV doesn’t work for gardens anymore. Especially on the NR. Look forward to watching your garden grow.
