Weather Stations From Acu-Rite Compatible With Weather Underground

For most of my adult life, I have been a weather geek. I have watched the Weather Channel all day at times, just because I love the weather reports. I can remember very clearly sitting on the sofa with my son when he was about 3 years old, watching the evening news weather report. The weather guy was talking about a “monster storm” that was coming our way. My son was too afraid to sleep that night, worried about that monster! I also worry about the monster storms, the tornadoes that frequent our part of the country. I try to stay abreast of the the weather conditions, no matter where I am, so that I will know if there is a storm coming.

Then one day, I received an email from Acu-Rite, asking me if I would like to review one of their Wireless Weather Stations that is compatible with Weather Underground, I just couldn’t believe it! I usually just respond to emails by sending emails back, but this time I picked up the telephone and called them to discuss this opportunity.

So, Fabgrandpa and I received the Weather Station, and read all the instructions about installing it and setting it up. The outdoor unit is powered by a tiny solar panel that charges 4 AAA batteries in a waterproof compartment. (Rechargeable batteries not included) The data that it collects is sent to the Internet Bridge by a wireless signal.

The Internet Bridge connects to your router by an ethernet cable, and sends the data to y our computer, where you have the AcuRite App software installed. You can look at all the data on any computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone that has the app installed. There is also a beautiful full color display unit that plugs into your computer via a USB port. All of the pieces work together to collect the data and display it so that you can keep up to date with the weather in your area.

Once we got the outdoor unit installed, we set up the Internet Bridge, and hooked up the Indoor Display Unit, and downloaded the AcuRite software. And then, this is what our display looked like:

This unit shows us the wind speed, the temperature outdoors, the humidity, the barometric pressure, and the rainfall amount. There is also a weather ticker across the bottom that tells you historic data, and other messages. The last step was setting up our Internet Bridge to share data to Weather Underground. Weather Underground is a free app for your smartphone, that shows the weather wherever your are. You can see the Personal Weather Stations on the map, and choose the one closest to you. You can see Fabgrandma Wildcat Rd on this map, which is the location of my weather station in my yard!

Send A #Elegram To Help The Nature Conservancy Of Africa Save The Elephants!

The Nature Conservancy Africa has an initiative right now to help save the Elephants. The #Elegram Project helps by raising money for each #Elegram that is uploaded. I made my Elegram using elephant shaped Gluten Free Graham Animal Crackers from Glutino. They are cute and taste good, but they can also help save their real life counterparts when I upload my Elegram to the #Elegram Project.

Before I was asked to help promote this project, I thought that the elephants in Africa were doing just fine. I thought that the demand for ivory was long gone, and that the elephants just did elephant things all day and did not have any worries. But, here are some facts that I learned:

Poachers take advantage when elephants are not being effectively protected. From supplying cutting-edge technology to supporting community watch programs, The Nature Conservancy is helping train and equip wildlife rangers to do a better job across the millions of square miles of elephant habitat they patrol.

Elephants herds are families that stay together for life.

An elephant herd can travel up to 30 miles a day in search of food, often encountering dangerous situations. The Nature Conservancy works with partners to form community-run conservation areas and to implement creative solutions, such as building a highway underpass to reconnect a blocked migration path.

Most illegal ivory is sold in China, where the majority of consumers are unaware of its origins and the elephant poaching crisis. The Nature Conservancy is mobilizing some of the country’s most influential leaders to educate consumers, erode the prestige of ivory and clean up the online marketplace.

Illegal ivory fetches high prices on the black market, creating a strong temptation for people living in poverty. The Nature Conservancy works with partners to provide incentives to people living among elephants to help keep them safe, such as better livelihoods. This is absolutely key to the long-term survival of elephants.

I was so surprised to learn that these beautiful animals were still being poached for their ivory! And, knowing that, I wish there was more that I could do.
