The last three days have been very windy and cold up here. The weather forecast yesterday was for up to six inches of snow by Thursday morning. We woke up today to this:

This is on Hwy 67 headed north out of the park this morning:
We had to go to Kanab to buy groceries, so we tried out the 4 wheel drive on our new truck. Although there was a lot of snow on the road, it wasn’t slick or slippery. Still, it was a scary ride down that plateau.

That’s a color picture, by the way. It looks more like Christmas than springtime! There were lots of cars going out, not so many coming in.
We bought all the groceries, filled up with fuel and headed back in record time. We wanted to get back home before it got dark and the temperature dropped. The sky looked ominous up ahead on the plateau where we live:

As we drove up Hwy 89A towards Jacob Lake, we went through a snow thunderstorm. It was very weird to have flashes of lightening and claps of thunder while it was snowing furiously. I don’t think I have ever encountered thunder snow before.

We passed one car that had run off the road into a ditch. I’m surprised there weren’t more. This road has a lot of traffic this time of year with visitors going to the North Rim.

We finally made it home to the North Rim. This is on Hwy 67, about a mile inside the park. The ranger at the gate said they had plowed the road twice while we were gone. About a mile past this point, the road was clear.
I was not surprised by this snow. Last year, the last snow of the season was on June 12. I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one more snowstorm this year.

I am so glad to finally be done with snow. Now if the rain will just stop for more than 2 or 3 days at a time. Glad you made it safely to town and back.
Snow is definitely beautiful but I’m sure I wouldn’t think so if it snowed in May or June. You didn’t mention if it was cold. I can’t imagine living in an RV through it. Kudos to you!
Brrr!
Send some of that snow and rain this direction. We need it…BAD!

Oh how I miss the area, but not the short, short growing season. The snow storms were so dang pretty though!
I saw a photo of Judy’s quilt on her blog and I loved it–came to your blog went back a few posts and saw the closeup photos of the quilt–great job and what wonderful memories for Judy! Love your blog but don’t like the looks of that snow!
Wow, what is going on with the weather this year? Over here in San Diego it cant seem to warm up above 65, so unusual. Ive seen lightning during a snow storm before when I lived in Upstate NY. Its pretty cool.
Great photos, but I think I’ll stick with my South Texas weather for now!
I can’t say as I have ever driven through a snow thunder storm yet. I watched the video, did you say 17 feet of snow?
When I look out my window at the tulips then back at your snap shots, I quickly look back out the window, yucks I wouldn’t want to wake up to snow after seeing Spring arrive. It will be gone before you know it. Looks like the 4-wheel worked out great.
Your pictures ALMOST makes us miss that snow. Gotta go find a cup of hot chocolate to warm up!
It is a wonderful area…
