Sarah’s Backpack Is Finished

Karen · 5 Comments

After that zipper pull came off, I had a date with my good friend, the seam ripper, to take it out and start over. By the time I got the zipper ripped out, I was O.V.E.R. sewing for a bit. While I love to sew, I really hate taking out stitches. Bleh!

Sarah's purple and pink backpack

Today was my day off, so I sat down at the sewing machine and finished up the backpack. It turned out really cute. I know Sarah is going to love it! I posted pictures of different fabrics on Facebook, and she picked the ones she wanted. I also gave her a choice of patches for the front, and she chose the Grand Canyon one. It does go with the colors very well.

Sarah's purple and pink backpack

It has a large zippered pocket on the outside so Sarah can take lots of her things with her.

Lots of pockets on the inside too!

It has lots of pockets on the inside too, big enough to hold a sketch pad, and some pens and pencils, and maybe a cellphone, but I don’t think her Mom lets her have one yet.

The Grand Canyon embroidered patch on the front.

Fabgrandpa modeled it for me. You know he loves his granddaughter to do this:

And here he is again:

Aw, What a guy!

What a guy! Isn’t he just the cutest? The backpack has adjustable straps, and a loop at the top. It is not a hard item to make, just have to be careful of those zippers!

A handy loop on the top.

And the  adjustable straps:

And of course, it has a FabGrandma label in it:

fabgrandma label inside!

I’m going to do my best to get this in the mail to Sarah tomorrow. If you want one, just contact me here, and we can discuss what color fabrics you want. This backpack sells for $45 plus shipping.

Happy Birthday To Me And Amelia

Karen · 8 Comments

Today is my birthday, and while I have to work today, FabGrandpa and I will be going to Flagstaff on Wednesday and Thursday for our “weekend”. I know we’ll have some fun there, and I will buy me a birthday present. Now, for your viewing pleasure, here are some photos of my granddaughter, Amelia, who is turing 1year old today. Yes, she was born on my birthday last year!

look at her go!

I could just eat these up!

Amelia In Her Curtain Dress

You remember I bought an antique curtain panel and made it into a dress for Amelia, my newest granddaughter?

Amelia’s Dress Finished

Karen · 5 Comments

I am so happy with how this turned out!

This has turned out to be a very satisfying project. That curtain panel really looks great in the finished product.

The pattern I used does not call for an overskirt, so when I cut the skirt, I cut it about 3 inches wider on each side than the underskirt, so that it would be “fluffy”.  I also cut it with the original hem at the bottom, and cut it 3 1/4 inches shorter than the underskirt, so that when I hemmed the underskirt, it is just the right length.

Here is the pattern I used, McCall’s 2053. I bought it in 1999, when Miss Sarah was born, and used it to make a dress for her, too.  Her’s was a baby plaid seersucker. It turned out just as cute. I made that hat for Sarah, too. I’m thinking this dress needs a more “baby bonnet”  looking hat, though.

McCall's 2053

I finished the back with baby snaps instead of a button, so that it will be easier on her mommy when she is dressing Amelia. Can’t wait to see the pictures, except that it is about the size to fit a 6-8 month old so I will have to wait. Sigh.

I’m sharing this on Everything Etsy’s “I Made It!” Blog Party

A New Dress For Amelia

Karen · 4 Comments

Yesterday when I was in Kanab, I found this old curtain panel in an antique shop for $4.00.

Soon to be a fluffy baby dress!

Today I made this dress for Amelia. The bodice is lined and it has an underskirt, both made with a piece of fabric I got in 2002 in a thrift shop in Forsyth, Georgia. There used to be an Arrow Shirt Factory there, and this fabric was once used for making expensive men’s dress shirts. I think I paid about 5o cents for a yard of it. It was just right for this dress.

Here is a close up of the bodice. I used a piece of lace around the neckline because the sheer fabric showed the seams in an ugly way.

Beautiful!

I still have to finish the hem and put on a button on the back, but I am so happy with the way this project turned out.  And I can’t wait to see a pic of Amelia modeling her dress.

My New Fab Granddaughter

Karen · 10 Comments

Amelia Summer Gail

Until today, I had four grandchildren–Michael, Sarah, Spencer, and Owen. Three Fab Grandsons, and one Fab Granddaughter. Every time one of my children and their spouse announced that they would be having a new baby, I always said, “You know if you have a girl, you will have to name her after me!” I never really expected that to happen, but a grandma can ask, right?

Amelia and her Mummy, Sarah

This morning, at 12:45 a.m., in a hospital in Maryland, Amelia Summer Gail Parson entered the world. She weighed in at 8 lbs, 13 oz. She is the pride and joy of my son, Seth and his lovely wife, Sarah. And, she shares MY birthday. They called me last night to tell me they were on the way to the hospital. The last time I talked to them was at about 11:45 p.m. Maryland time. Sarah said she was only dilated to 5 cm, so they didn’t expect the baby to arrive any time soon. I told them I had to get up early to go to work, and asked that they just text me, so I would know when I got up whether or not she had been born.

Amelia and her Daddy, Seth

This morning, I called, and Sarah told me Miss Amelia was born just an hour after I last talked to her. She told me there were pictures posted on Facebook, so while I was talking to her, I signed on to look. And that is when I discovered that they HAD named this baby after me. I got so choked up I could barely speak. And my eyes started leaking. My son said that since she was born on my birthday, she had to have my name.  Her “middle middle ” name, Gail is my middle name. What a wonderful birthday surprise–not only does she share my birthdate, she shares my name as well!

I Love A Vacation IV

Seth and Big Sarah on the patio at Granny's house.

After dinner at my  mother’s house on Wednesday, we all sat outside on the patio and watched the children run and play. All of these photos were taken by my daughter. What I love about them is that they were all taken when the children were busy, so they did not know they were being photographed. They were just plain being themselves–and those moments are priceless.

Little Sarah at Granny Stroud's house.

The older kids were tossing a frisbee back and forth, and little Owen was running his little legs off trying to get it before Bunni the dog did. He only got his hands on the frisbee a couple of times, but he had the most fun you could ever see just running. He laughed so much!  I really enjoyed watching the action.

Owen sitting for just a second.

Thursday I got up and took Sarah down to the lobby for breakfast with her Dad and brothers, but I met a long time friend, Elaine, across the street at Cracker Barrell. Elaine and I have known each other since we were Fab Teenagers, and that was a long long time ago. We met when we both worked at Southern Bell as long distance operators. They were still using those cord boards back then ! We had great fun together, both on and off the job, and stayed best of friends for several years after we both left Southern Bell (I went back to work there a few years later).

Running fast!

But life intervened, and Elaine married, had babies, and went to college at night, and we lost touch with each other. Imagine my surprise when in 2003, I received an email from her! She had one of those paid subscriptions to Classmates.com and had found me through my profile there. Since then we

Playing frisbee with Bunni

have tried to see each other every time I go “home” to Georgia. We laughed for an hour there at the Cracker

Barrell, and after breakfast, she went back to the motel with me to meet Seth, the adult version. She had spent a lot of time with him when he was a baby, and hadn’t seen him in about 33 years. I was sorry to have to say goodbye to her, but she was on a work day and had to get back to work.

We all gathered up Little Sarah’s belongings, because it was time for her to leave us and go to her other grandmother’s house. As we went out to Seth’s truck to load her things, the desk clerk said to me, “Mam, do you have a red purse?” and I did. She said I had left it in the lobby and since she had recognized it, she picked it up and held it behind the counter until she saw me! I felt a little foolish, but I know, it happens.

Michael sitting on the bench.

We hung around outside by Seth’s truck, saying our goodbyes, and getting those last hugs in with Little Sarah. Soon they drove away, and FabGrandpa and I went up to our room to rest a minute, then decided we needed to go to Wal-Mart. We went downstairs and out to our truck, where we found on

e of Little Sarah’s bags sitting on the sidewalk. I called Seth to let him know, and told him I would give it to the desk clerk for him to come back to get it. I guess it runs in the family!

Siblings sharing a coke.

That night, after Little Sarah had been delivered to her other grandparents, Seth and the rest met us at Cracker Barrell for dinner, along with my sister Linda and her husband. We had a nice time together, and afterwards, Linda and Alan came up to our room to look at our family portraits.  And, because Sarah had left and the bed was unoccupied,. Becky came to spend the night with us.

Ready! Set! Go!

Friday morning, it was time for us to say goodbye to everyone and be on our way–to Cleveland, Georgia to visit FabGrandpa’s parents.

I Love A Vacation II

Karen · 3 Comments

Emily and Sarah in the motel lobby.

Monday started early, with Emily showing up at the motel at 8 a.m. We loaded up all the girls and headed out for a fun day out without the guys. We had breakfast in the lobby, then headed out to the nail shop to get manicures and pedicures.

FabGrandma and Sarah at the nail shop.

Little Sarah had never had a mani-pedi before. She was a little “weirded out” by the massage chair, and laughed when the manicurist was working on her feet, but she loved every minute of it. (the big girls did, too!)

Little Sarah, Emily, Big Sarah at the nail shop.

We all loved the pampering. We kept the folks at the nail shop pretty busy. Although I don’t like to wear nail polish on my fingernails, I do love the color on my toes!

Little Sarah's manicure.

Apparently, blue nail polish and flowers are really “IN” for the eleven year old girlie crowd.

Excellent Pedicures!
Three generations of purty toes!

After all the toes and fingers were done, we went next door to the Coldstone Creamery for some sweet refreshments. Did you know that you can get cake batter ice cream, that  has no wheat or gluten in it, AND they will put some buttercream frosting on top? Now THAT was a delicious way to end the day!
