benefit auction

Send Me Your Spare Change

Karen · 13 Comments

No, really. I have been doing an auction here at FabGrandma since November, to raise money to benefit The Oral Cancer Foundation. In case you haven’t noticed, there is a large “DONATE” button over there at the top of the right side bar. You will also see a meter over there that says I have raised $197.50. That figure is not counting this weeks auction item, which is a copy of my family’s cookbook on CD (unfortunately, it was written before I was gluten free, so the recipes are not GF).

When I started this auction, I had a puny goal of raising $100. The first item up for bids brought that, so I raised the goal to $200.  When I got to $190, I decided to raise the goal to $500. So, what I am asking you to do, is look in your paypal account, and send me the spare change you have in there. So, if you have, say $45.67, send me the 67 cents. Any amount from 1 cent up to 99cents will be appreciated. It is easy to do, just click on that donate button over on the side bar.

I will be sending one big donation to The Oral Cancer Foundation at the end of January, to celebrate FabGrandpa’s 10 years of survival of oral cancer.  We want you to join in this celebration by asking  your doctor or dentist to screen you for oral cancer at your next appointment. Join the party! Find out if a killer is hiding under your nose.

10 for 10 Auction: A Copy Of My Family Cookbook on CD

Karen · 2 Comments

FabGrandpa and his brothers in 1992

The item up for bids this week is a CD copy of our Family Cookbook. Back in 1996, my mother finally agreed to write down all her recipes so that I could type them up for a family cookbook. All the women (and some of the men) in our family also contributed to this recipe collection. The original book was only my mother’s recipes, printed on 8  1/2 X 11 inch paper, and bound with a comb binding. It had her picture on the front, and there were only 14 copies made–one for each of my siblings and each of the adult grandchildren. After that first print was done, all of the women (and some of the men) in our family also contributed to this recipe collection. We printed about  100 copies on in a book  that was 8 1/2 X 5 1/2 inches. It had 250 pages at that size, and all 100 copies were distributed.

A well used and well loved cookbook

Today I am offering a CD version of the 250 page cookbook, Recipes From Our Mother’s Kitchen. It doesn’t have my mother’s picture on the front of it, but it will be signed by me, FabGrandma.

I am starting the bid for this item at $5.  All proceeds from this auction are being donated to The Oral Cancer Foundation, a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities. To make a bid, just leave a comment here with a dollar amount that you wish to bid. The auction winner is responsible for paying shipping from Alabama zip code 36744.

See the auction rules here.

More information here.

This auction will close on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time. The highest bidder will win. The winner will be responsible for paying postage to ship the item. If you have any questions about this item, email me at fabgrandma @ gmail.com

If you’d like to spread the word about this auction to benefit The Oral Cancer Foundation, and to help educate people about oral cancer, please tweet about it, post about it on Facebook, or write about it on your blog. I’d really appreciate it! and you could be saving someone’s life!

There were no bids on these two  auctions,so i am leavingthose  items up for bids until someone bids on them.  Please place a bid of $5.00 to make one of these items yours:

10 For 10 Auction: Stainless Steel Grand Canyon Water Bottle

Karen · 2 Comments

Me and Jim at Point Sublime

There we are at Point Sublime. To get there, you  have to take a four wheel drive vehicle about 20 miles out on one of the roughest roads I have ever been on. The view at the end is stunning! That drive was nothing compared to the months of treatments and recuperation Jim went through after being diagnosed with oral cancer in January, 2001. I am so thankful and grateful for every day we have together, because not everyone makes it to the end of that road.

I am doing this auction to bring awareness of oral cancer to as many people as I can reach. The screening for oral cancer is a simple “in the doctor’s or dentist’s office”, non-invasive proceedure. It only takes about 5 minutes. So, this year when you have your annual physical or the next time you go to have your teeth cleaned, ask your doctor or dentist to screen you for it.

The item up for bids this week is a genuine Grand Canyon National Park stainless steel water bottle:

Grand Canyon Water Bottle

This is a nice bottle, with a plastic screw in stopper that has a hole in the top for attaching to a lanyard or belt clip. It is lightweight and easy to hold on to.

Oh, and I have signed the bottom of it:

10 For 10 Auction: Photo Box

Karen · 3 Comments

oral cancer survivor
Becca and Jim

This week I am auctioning off this cute photo box. It was given to us by my daughter, Becca, several years ago. I love it very much, but I just have no where to put it in our little home. The box measures approximately 12″ X 9″ X 4″ and holds quite a few photographs. It has a glassed frame on the front of it that will hold a 4′ X 6″ photo. That’s Becca and my son, Seth, in 1996 in that photo, and no, you don’t get the photo if you win the auction!

Yeaw, who lost his battle.  Read more about The Oral Cancer Foundation here.
