Why Oh Why Do I Have Such A Hard Time Buying A Bra?

[ad#Home Page Above Posts]

Now that we have FabGrandpa all set for the wedding, I have turned my attention to getting MY outfit ready. With less than six weeks to go before the big day, as of this morning I still needed to get my undergarments and get my dress altered.

I spent loads of time searching for just the right dress. Because I am a big, fluffy girl, I do NOT do sleeveless or even cap sleeves. I wanted a dress with sleeves. I know other big women who have not problem displaying their bare arms, but I am not that girl. I just don’t feel comfortable going sleeveless in public. Hell, I hardly ever go sleeveless at home. So, after searching in stores and online for over a year, I found this dress back in the summer and ordered it (mine is amethyst):

My Mother of the Bride Dress

Before I placed my order, I went down to Kanab, Utah to the fabric store that lives in the Ace Hardware Store there, and had the lady who worked there measure me to determine what size to get. She did a fabulous job, and when my dress came, it fit perfectly, EXCEPT that the sleeves were too tight. And it is a little too long.

So, because I thought whoever altered the dress would have to take the sleeves off and put on some new ones, I ordered a yard of the fabric from the manufacturer. Yes. A yard. Because that is the minimum purchase of matching fabric that they will sell you. And you do not want to know how much that yard of fabric cost me!

I found a pair of shoes to wear when we were in Atlanta on Monday: They are Anne  Klein flats, like this, but not exactly this:

Pewter Flats

I have no desire to wear heels. Well, I’d like to wear heels, but the last time I wore a pair of heels was in 1991. I was late for work and running through the lobby of BellSouth Center in downtown Atlanta. I slipped and fell and slid like a football field length through rush hour traffic on that polished marble floor, with my feet in the air and my dress over my head. I was praying to myself that no one saw it happen, when two young men leaned over and asked me “Mam, are you ok?” I never wore another pair of high heeled shoes since then, and I never wore that dress to work again because I was so afraid someone would remember it. Ahem, so…Where was I? Oh yeah, the bra…And you KNOW how much I hate to shop for bras!

Today all I had to do was go to David’s Bridal in Tuscaloosa, buy a Longline Strapless Bra and then go to the alteration shop for a fitting. Except that David’s didn’t have one of those contraptions that fit me. They DO carry them in my size, but they didn’t have one in the store. And they said it would take eight weeks to order one. 8 WEEKS! I need it today. So, off we went, looking for something like this:

longline strapless bra

Not EXACTLY this, but something LIKE this

We went to three different stores looking.  No stores in Tuscaloosa had anything like this in stock. I did eventually find a regular strapless bra, that fit better than any of the others I had tried on all day, and bought it, just so I could get to the alteration shop and be fitted today.  Notice I did not say it fit. I was able to fasten it around my body, but the cups were a bit too big. I got no support, I tell ya, no support.  I am hoping to order that one pictured here, and have it arrive in time to wear it the day of the wedding. My girls need all the help they can get.

A Visit From Becca and Ken

Me, Becca and Ken at the entrance station

My daughter, Becca, and her boyfriend, Ken came to visit us. They live in the Denver area, and spent the weekend in Taos, NM. They arrrived here onMonday night, right about the time we were having horrendous severe weather here at the North Rim. There were 4 tornadoes, and 28 tornado warnings, high winds, hail, lightning, and thunder so loud it shook our trailer on Tuesday. I had to work at the entrance on Tuesday, so they came out there to eat lunch with me. After I got  home, the electricity went out for 6 hours. Welcome to the North Rim in October. But seriously, it is not usually that bad.

Becca and I at breakfast on Thursday in Jacob Lake

We had a wonderful visit, even though we did nothing at all on Wednesday, my day off, except for me to rest my poor old tired feet. I cooked dinner at home–I made the last of the catfish we brought with us from Alabama, smothered with sauteed onions. There was a shrimp and avocado salad and some brussels sprouts to round out the meal.  We talked most of the day, and half the night while we waited for the electricity to come back on. Even though we still have heat in the RV when the electricity is off, the furnace in the trailer next door where they were staying was broken and did not work.

On Thursday, we got up and went to Zion National Park, stopping for breakfast at Jacob Lake Inn. That is my favorite place to eat in the area–they have good bacon and decent hash browns to go with my two over easy eggs, and I have never gotten a gluten reaction eating there.

We stopped at the scenic overlook to take some pictures and buy some Navajo jewelry. My pictures didn’t come out that good, but just look at those pretty necklaces!

A little further down the road we stopped again to take pictures of The Vermillion Cliffs and these great clouds. The weather was still not cleared up to the east of us, and it showed in these photos.  We went over to Hurricane, Utah so that we could buy some groceries and enter Zion National Park through the west gate. On the way, we stopped at Sprindale Fruit Company for some delicious smoothies and some Nauvoo Jam.

Springdale Fruit Company

Springdale Fruit Company has a very good selection of dried fruits, nuts, jams, and jellies. This time of year, you can pick your own apples. We didn’t pick any, but we did buy a few pears and plums, along with a jar of Raspberry Jam. Mmmmm.

Zion was truly amazing, as always, except that they are working on the roads there so we were not able to stop much to take pictures. I did get a few:

A beautitul sunset over the Kaibab Plateau to end the day

After we drove through Zion, we went to Kanab so Becca could buy cheezy souvineers for the kids she keeps, and then to Nedra’s Mexican Restaurant for dinner. I had the carnitas, which were very good, and came with the standard rice, beans, and corn tortillas. As we drove home we were treated to a beautiful sunset to end the day. AndFabGrandpa was laughing, because Becca, Ken and I all had our cameras out, taking pictures as we flew down the road.

OOOO, Two Lovely Quilts Back From the Quilter

The front of Becca's lone star quilt

I started this one last summer when I was up here at the North Rim–this bugger was hard to cut and hard to sew, but I think my efforts paid off really well–this thing is gorgeous!

I do not have room to quilt large quilts in my travel trailer, so I got a referral from the local quilt shop for a very nice lady to do the quilting on a long arm machine.

She was quite reasonable, and got them done in a very timely manner–not to mention that she made my quilts look soooooo goooood!

one more close up of the front

I usually piece the back of the quilts I make, because I like the added personality it adds to a quilt, not to mention that if you turn it over, you get another whole quilt to display on your bed.

The back of the lone star quiltSince I know Becca likes greens and earthy tones, I added them to the back of this quilt.

I also was able to use up some more scraps from my fabric stash by doing this. Since I only have “so much room” for fabric, using up means I get to buy more, heheheh!

I knew Becca would like that green leaf print.

This one, for ME, after almost 12 years of making quilts:

I chose to make the back mostly brown, with an accent of a striped fabric that has all the colors of the quilt in it.

I love the back of this one, too. Jorja, the woman who did the quilting, used turquoise thread in the bobbin so that the quilting would show up against the brown background. Love!

I love how the quilted floral motif shows up here.

I only started this one in February, so it is really one of the quickest large quilts I have ever made. I am very pleased with how it turned out, too.

Even closer up to show block detail

Although the pattern called for 16 different fabrics for the blocks, I only had 8, so I used each one twice as much. I named this quilt my “Kaibab Quilt” because the colors in it remind me of the Kaibab National Forest, with the ponderosa pines, the aspens, the wildflowers in them meadows, and the puffy white clouds that always seem to be in the sky out there.

On my bed

I have to get the binding on Becca’s quilt first, because she is coming to visit in about a week and a half–so I trimmed mine and put it on the bed. We are going to use it unfinished until I get Becca’s done. It was so nice to sleep under it last night!

Mother of the Bride

Mother of the Bride

After months of looking in stores and online, I finally found a dress I liked–it was the color I wanted, the size I needed, a good price. So, I ordered it from BestBridalPrices.com. And held my breathe, hoping like crazy they would deliver it. It arrived yesterday, and I LOVE this dress. It fits me so well, except for needing some alteration on the sleeves and bodice, which can be done with no problem.

Outside for a different light, still looks good!

The wedding isn’t until February, so I still have plenty of time to find the right underwear, shoes, jewelry, jacket, and bag to go with the dress. I am soooo relieved about getting the dress, though. And Mr. Fabgrandma said “You are going to be the second prettiest woman at the wedding!”

Mother Of The Bride Dress Ordered: Check

I ordered mine in amethyst

While I won’t look as slim and sleek as that model, I have ended the search for my Mother Of The Bride dress for Becky’s wedding. I have only been shopping and searching for it since August of last year. This one has all the things I was looking for: It has sleeves, because I do not do sleeveless. It has a beaded or sequined bodice. It comes in amethyst, which is a color I like and that looks good on me. And it was reasonably affordable. It takes 11-16 weeks for delivery, the website says, so it will be a while before I can model it and see how close to her I look in this dress. I am just glad that the dress has been ordered. Now I just need to find some shoes, and a nice necklace to wear with it. The hunt is on…..

Still Looking For A Mother Of The Bride Dress

And I think I may have found one. Or two. I was looking online tonight for  Mother of the Bride Dresses at RomanticGowns.com! and found this one:

This one comes in my size in Champaigne

And this one:

I love the periwinkle color.

The wedding will be in February in the north Georgia mountains, so it will be cold or cool. I don’t like wearing a dress that has no sleeves, so both of these would be good choices. I really like the periwinkle color. But do you think it would make me look washed out with my gray hair?  What do you think?
