Everyone knows about the New Years Eve Celebration in Times Square in New York City. The party started there in 1904, and has grown into the event we all watch on TV now. But, have you ever wondered how people in other parts of the country ring in the New Year? Here are some fun New Year Celebrations from around the country!
Tallapoosa, Georgia:
Just because it is where I live, I’ll tell you about the Possum Drop in Tallapoosa, Georgia. Tallapoosa is located in west Georgia, the last town before you cross the border into Alabama. Back in the 1800’s our town was called Possum Snout, before the name was changed to Tallapoosa. So, when a local taxidermist found a dead possum , he stuffed it, and named it Spencer after a prominent local businessman from the time when the town was called Possum Snout. Now, that stuffed possum is dropped from the top of one of the oldest buildings in town. There are food vendors, souvenirs, two stages with live bands, and more. See the Possum Drop website to find out more.
Hagerstown, Maryland:
Krumpke’s Donut Drop sounds like a tasty good time, doesn’t it? The first 5,000 people to show up to the party on the square in downtown Hagerstown get a free Krumple’s Donut. There is also free coffee, free hot chocolate, and free popcorn! The event offers a Kids Zone, with games, crafts, and a bounce house. The big finale is the fireworks display. Find out more about this family friendly event here.
Nashville, Tennessee:
Jack Daniels Music City Midnight is the party to be at in Nashville. This year it takes place at Bicentennial Capital Mall State Park. “It” is a free concert featuring Keith Urban, Styx, Charlie Worsham, and more. And, like the other celebrations around the country, this one features a drop too. This time, it’s a Music Note Drop and a fireworks display. This event even has an app!
New Orleans, Louisana:
It seems that the theme of most New Years Celebrations includes dropping something from a height, and New Orleans is no exception. Here, they drop a Fleur de Lis at midnight. If you can’t find a place to celebrate New Years in NOLA, you haven’t looked. From the Allstate Sugar Bowl Parade, to the Zoo Year’s eve party at the zoo, there is truly something for everyone in New Orleans, but be at Jackson Square before midnight for the best fireworks display in the city. Denver, Colorado:
While I didn’t find anything to indicate that the celebrations in Denver involve dropping anything, they are going to have not one but TWO fireworks displays at the 16th Stree Mall. The first one will take place at 9:00 p.m., the second one at the stroke of midnight. In between times, there are lots of opportunities to party, from Howl At The Moon, to another Zoo Year’s Eve, to the Great Hall Silent DJ Party at Union Station in downtown Denver.
No matter where you spend New Year’s Eve, be safe. Take a cab home if you drink, and don’t let your friends drive drunk.

I haven’t traveled anywhere for a NYE celebration but I would love to try something new someday. The possum drop in your hometown sounds so fun and very unique!
