Now that we are looking towards the new year, many of us are making New Years Resolutions to save money in 2017. There are lots of ways to pinch pennies and keep more of your hard earned dollars in your pocket. Here are some of the ways that Fabgrandpa and I save money throughout the year.
Buy Seasonings in Bulk
If you like to use a lot of different herbs and spices, then you know how expensive they can be. One small jar of Cinnamon can cost more than $4.00! We found a farmer’s market type store in our area, Dekalb Farmer’s Market, were we can buy four ounces of most herbs and spices by the pound. I was very surprised at the low prices of these seasonings. It is a long way to go there from our home, so we only go about twice a year to stock up, but it well worth the drive.
Buy Meats on Sale
When you catch chickens on sale for 69 cents a pound, buy several and put them in the freezer. I look for sales on meats every time I go to the grocery store. When I see a good price, I try to buy several packages of whatever it might be. I also look for meats that have been marked down, and either use them that day or freeze them for later. When I buy meats in bulk, I separate it into meal size portions and put them in zip lock freezer bags, so that I can take just what I need out of the freezer when I am ready to use it.
Cut your own hair
We got a hair clipper several years ago, and I have been cutting Fabgrandpa’s hair ever since. He like the way it looks, and it saves us from $15 to $25 every time I cut his hair.
Take Care Of Routine Car Maintenance At Home
Simple things like changing the oil, changing the windshield wipers, and adding windshield wiper washer can easily be done at home. Other things like repairing a broken tail light or headlight, changing blown fuses, or checking the tire pressure are things you can do at home to save money.
Shop Thrift Stores
Many things you may need during the course of the year may be found in thrift stores. Fabgrandpa and I have shopped at thrift stores many times, and found things for our home at a fraction of the price of buying them new. Cutlery, silverware, glassware, storage containers, and much more can be found if you look thoroughly through the thrift stores in your area. You might also find baby furniture, children’s clothing, books, and games. We have found many items in good condition, and save lots of money by shopping in thrift stores.
