Technically, Spring is still three weeks away, but it is about this time each year that I start thinking about planting a garden and getting outside. I dream dreams of flowers and vegetables and butterflies, and plan ways to make it happen. So, I was so excited when I was contacted by Smart-Pond to discuss creating an above ground fountain in my yard.
When we bought our house, there was a pond existing in the front yard. It was right next to the front porch, and really close to my bedroom windows. From late spring until winter the frogs that lived in that pond sang their croaking song ALL. NIGHT. LONG. They sounded like they were under my bed. That pond had not been well thought out by the previous owners of the house, nor was it built well. If there was a pump ever installed in it, it didn’t work. Stagnant pools of water breed mosquitoes, and this one was no exception.
We couldn’t sit out on the front porch on cool nights because the mosquitoes from the pond would eat us alive. There was also the attraction of boys to water, and we constantly worried about our younger grandsons falling into it when they came to visit. We made the decision last year to drain the pond and fill it in. It was a detriment to the property, and I was having enough of a problem trying to sleep without the cacophony of the frogs each night.
For the last week, since I got the email from Smart-Pond, Fabgrandpa and I have been planning and discussing what we want our fountain to look like. We know a couple of things for sure, but haven’t finished planning just yet. We know there will be some potted annuals for lots of color around the fountain. There will be some butterfly bushes, Shasta Daisies, Coreopsis, and Purple Coneflowers planted directly in the ground to attract butterflies and humming birds. I can’t wait to get started on this new water feature. I’ll keep you up to date on the progress because I know you are all just as excited for me as I am.
If you were building an above ground fountain, what would yours look like? Show me some links in comments. What flowers would you plant? Do you already have a fountain? Show me a picture of it.

I do not have a pond or fountain in my yard, but the neighbor up the street has a pond with flowers and a waterfall that is so pretty. She puts flowers around it. Really great to look at in the Spring and Summer. I bet your pond will turn out amazing!
