Back To The Roots sent me this amazing Mushroom Kit. It comes in a recyclable box is embedded with tomato, basil, and kale seeds, so that once you’re done harvesting the mushrooms, you plant the box itself and it keeps on growing!
The mushroom garden will produce up to a pound and a half of oyster mushrooms right on your kitchen windowsill. The first mushrooms will appear in about 10 days.
Back To The Roots mission is to make food personal again, and to inspire people to gorw their own food by making it as easy as possible. This grow your own mushroom garden uses recycled coffee grounds so that anyone can grow their own food. The gardens need only be misted twice a day. Each kit can grow up to 1.5 pounds of mushrooms. When a family is done growing their kit, they can post a photo of it on Back To The Roots Facebook page, and they will donate a kit and sustainability curriculum to a classroom of their choice.
As a Grandma, I think it would be a fun project to do with my grandchildren. They could help water the garden when they come over, and help harvest and cook the mushrooms when they grow. And even if the grandchildren are far away, I love having this for myself just for the fresh mushrooms! What a wonderful gift to give anyone!
Back To The Roots Mushroom Garden Kits sell for $19.99 at Whole Foods stores in the United States, as well as in select regional retailers. Find a location near you here.

This looks like a fun project and better than the mushrooms my in-laws used to grow under the porch — but the same idea!
