I have been cheating on my gluten free diet for three days this week. And I am paying for it. I mean really REALLY paying for it. I knew better, but I did it anyway.
The first night I ate a yeast roll at the Backwoods Steakhouse. It was so soft and yeasty and pleasant to smell. I could feel myself being pulled in by the aroma, just like you see in the cartoons when someone smells something delicious and is pulled along by the visible aroma waves, that is how I felt. So, I ate one. And the next day, my joints hurt.
Then we went to the Crossroads Restaurant, where they are famous for their buttermilk biscuits. And it happened again. And I LOVED it, it tasted so good and delicious and SOUTHRN. And again, I felt the bloating start before we even left to come home.
Then, last night, I was at my mother’s having dinner with my son and his family, and my sister. And my 84 year old Mama had made her wonderful squash casserole. The one that has bread in it and crushed up Ritz crackers on top of it. And I ate two helpings of it. And today, all my joints hurt, I feel bloated, and my stomach hurts. And I am done with gluten again.
I have been so good up to this point, staying gluten free. I have no idea why I did this to myself this time. I KNOW better. I KNOW that if I eat gluten I will be sick, for days. And I know we are getting ready to travel in just a couple of days. And I did it anyway. So, if you are like me, and must eat gluten free, and you think “I can handle just a taste”–DON’T DO IT! YOU are the only person who will be hurt by it.

Shame on you. You know better.
