Last week Rob and Belinda (the other camphost couple here at Payne Lake) and FabGrandpa and I went over to the shooting range on the other side of the county for a clean up day. This shooting range is on Forest Service property, and has no use fee. People can just go there and shoot at targets.
Joe, the resource manager was there too, so there were a total of five of us working. We picked up FOUR truckloads of trash from this property, that was maybe 1.5 to 2 acres in size. Joe said the last time they had a clean up day there was two months ago. Now, I know that this place is probably used mostly by hunters, but what does this say about the people who live in this area? I just don’t understand why they feel like they can just trash the place. It is public land, and belongs to all of us. Shouldn’t we ALL do our best to keep it clean?

People are slobs!
Linda Sewell says
Because people are lazy slobs and have NO regard for anyone except themselves. You wouldn’t believe the amount of trash we pick up right in our own front yard…..just throw your trash out the window…it’s OK, someone will pick it up….WELL I say….keep your trash to yourself! SLOBS!

OMG…this is horrible I say it is a public area then perhaps put up a gate and charge admission to go in, it still is public but perhaps it will pay for the wages of these 4 people to clean up. I guess we are lucky here, not bragging but often I have guests in and have heard them repeat the same thing over and over, “the Island is so clean.” I mean I know this from living in a big city then moving to a mural small Island but for the most part we don’t see this. I can remember the complaints in the paper about the trash some people throw out the window and a lot of it has a “Tim Horton’s” coffee cup in it. Can’t blame Tim Horton’s because some people are slobs. Can’t blame all coffee drinkers either. Funny, I can remember the kids were young and they asked me different times, why I pick up garbage and put it in the car? I always told them it shouldn’t be there, especially brown bear bottles because they could start a fire. I went for a drive with my daughter this past week and went to put my feet on the floor of the car and she said, “what” You told us never to throw out our garbage. Sometimes we drive each other but often they too pick up garbage when they see it and I can’t wait till their kids are old enough to say, Mommy, why are you picking garbage?
