FabGrandpa and I have been traveling our path together for more than 19 years now. Of all our travels, he loves the desert southwest the best. Every time we drive down the road and see that formation pictured above, he can not keep his eyes off of it. He is sort of mesmerized by the different layers, and how they look different in every kind of light.
This week’s auction item is Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey.
Desert Solitaire describes Abbey’s life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeast Utah. Written in an eloquent and provoking style, the book urges us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world. It was given to us as a gift from our daughter, and we would sincerely like to keep it, but books weigh us down in our travels, so it has to go. A quote from the book:
“Suppose we say that wilderness invokes nostalgia, a justified not merely sentimental nostalgia for the lost America our forefathers knew. The word suggests the past and the unknown, the womb of earth from which we all emerged. It means something lost and something still present, something remote and at the same time intimate, something buried in our blood and nerves, something beyond us and without limit, Romance–but not to be dismissed on that account. The romantic view, while not the whole of truth, is a necessary part of the whole truth.”
